Obituary: Services for Walter Joe Gowens, 90, of Pleasant Gap will be , 18, 2015 at 11a.m. at Thompson with the Rev. Rodney Ragsdale, the Rev. Tommy Ledbetter, the Rev. Joey Hudgins, and the Rev. Debra Welsh officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Union Grove . The family will recieve friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Gowens passed away , 13, 2015 at his home. Survivors include four children, Marshea Welsh (Dale) of Rock Run, Sandra Walton (Tim) of Alabaster, Donnie Gowens (Janet Henson) of Pleasant Gap, and Tammy Jones (Brian) of Spring Garden; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Herman Gowens of Pleasant Gap; and many loved nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Welsh, Mike Welsh, Mark Welsh, Jason Gilliland, Andrew McLarty, and Levi Welsh. Mr. Gowens was a lifelong resident of Cherokee , a graduate of Spring Garden High School and was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church. He was a U.S.Navy World War II veteran having served on the USS Lexington CV16/Seaman First Class. He receieved the Philippine Liberation Ribbon (2 STARS), the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher with over 40 years of service. returning from World War II he played basketball for the YMCA for many years. He enjoyed supporting Spring Garden School and community. He loved his family and was faithful to visit friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Edna Jo Gowens; his parents, Walt and Fannie Vickers Gowens; and two brothers Odus and Vester Gowens.
