Obituary: John Gieringer, 86, was born 31, 1930, the sixth child of 12 to Charles and Margaret in Kansas City, MO. John was reunited with God his creator, and childhood sweetheart, wife, Joan (5-27-32 to 3-2-13), on 27, 2017. On , 10, a visitation will be held at 1:30pm with a celebration of life tribute at 2:15pm, at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funearl , 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO, followed by a burial at 3:00pm at Mt. Moriah . In 1960, John began attending Colonial Presbyterian. He was allowed to opportunity to travel the country advocating Gods word and message. He spoke with local, state, and national leaders, and teachers organizations. He ultimately became president of the Missouri State Teachers Association and was seen nationally as an advocate for educator's rights. He organized workshops, sent out mass mailings and was a leading voice in the unionization of teachers. This activity was not without conflict as he was terminated by the District but was rehired after he succeeded in a lawsuit against the district. He was terminated a second time one year short of tenure. Many in the teaching community believed the termination was punitive for his outspokenness for teachers rights. At the time of his rehire with he was assigned to teach physical education in the elementary schools in the district as opposed to his counseling that he did earlier in his career. He embraced this new role as an encourager to these younger students to be healthy in mind, body, and to set goals in life. John took advantage of every opportunity he was given to make the most of it. In the 1980's John continued teaching physical education at Metro Christian Academy and worked for Ideal Delivery, had independent businesses distributing AMS Oil and Barley Green nutritional foods. He also began a ministry outreach, God's Word and Way, to advocate a focusing and return to God's Biblical teachings and return to morality in public education lead by political and religious leaders John traveled across the country and to Washington, DC, speaking to prominent Christian leaders and politicians (Falwell, Graham, Schueller, Stanley, Dobson). He spoke with Mayors, governors, congress/senators, and Hillsdale college members. John treasured childrens births, school years, their marriages, and birth of grandchildren. He expressed sadness of parents, aunts, uncles, siblings who have passed. He was a dedicated caregiver to the individuals he knew in their senior years. In retirement, he pursued lifelong hobbies like golf, bowling, running, cards, fitness, ball buzzing, thrift stores, and community volunteering. John was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2006. For the last 10+ years of his life, he continued living life to the fullest. He was healthy and happy. some gradual change, John and Joan moved to Sweet Life Rosehill in 2011 and later to Sweet Life Shawnee. In Johns final years, he lived at stead South and then Azria the last 8 months. He educated the staff and let them know that individuals are more than a terminal diagnosis. His smiles, hugs, dispositions, even stubbornness expressed his understanding of his surroundings. John lost his ability to speak two years ago, but still kept the smiles and hugs coming. He communicated and expressed understanding of verbal requests until his last 24 hours, still recognizing family. His strength became weak in the last 4 days. John fell 2/24 and 2/25. He received 11 stitches as a result - a missed tackle hitting the turf. was spent in prayer and reading scripture from his Bible. Farewells were expressed. A peace an calm was present knowing God was soon to call his good and faithful servant home. John had a pervasive sense of gratitude to God, family, and country. He was an honest, fun, spirited, loyal, hard-working, effective man of integrity. A Christian leader, a worthy competitive warrior, a gift of service, a life well lived. John is survived by his daughter Joy (Rick) Weekly, grandchildren Sarah, Tyler, and Cameron of Shawnee, KS, and Patrick (Ashley), great-grandchildren Joella and Abigail of Columbus, MS; his son Michael (Wendy) Gieringer, grandchildren Rebekah and Michaela of Ottawa, KS; siblings Chuck (Mamie), Leo (Barbara), Ben, Michael Gieringer and Rosemary Schultz; brothers-in-law, Harry Smith and Harry Renne; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
