Obituary: Joanne Marie (Matousek) Gotsch was born on 24, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Margaret (Spinner) and Joseph Matousek. She married the late Gerald (Jerry) Gotsch on 21, 1954, at St. Matthias Church in Chicago, Illinois. Surviving to cherish her memory are her two sons, Hon. Michael G. Gotsch, Sr. (Sarah) and Thomas J. Gotsch (Marilyn), nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson. A 1956 graduate (cum laude) of Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Joanne served her country by teaching mathematics to airmen and soldiers at the Itazuke Air Force base in Fukuoka, Japan, while her husband served in the U.S. Army at the same base. She deferred her teaching career to raise her sons, but returned to work in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management as an instructor and retired in 1989. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she never forgot a birthday, anniversary or graduation date. Her number one priority was always her family, and she would travel hundreds of miles to attend ball games, concerts or school events. moving to South Bend in 2002, Joanne was very involved with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), the Serra Club, and the senior club at St. Thérèse, Little Flower Parish. She and Jerry traveled extensively, and especially enjoyed Western Europe, the National Parks, and the Big Island of Hawaii. Joanne was an avid reader of almost any genre, but had a particular interest in the Bible, medicine, and Agatha Christie mysteries. Her extensive review of medical journals earned her the sobriquet of Dr. Gotsch. As her husband, Jerry, died on 23rd of this year, Joanne has now been reunited with her soul mate of over 60 years. Evidently, it wasn really heaven for Jerry without Joanne. The family wishes to thank the staff at Schubert Villa for their loving care of Mom over the past months, and for their kindness, sympathy, and support following her sudden and unexpected passing. Friends may call on , 25, 2014, from 3:30 until 6:30 P.M., at St. Thérèse, Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood Road, South Bend, Indiana. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 7:00 P.M., with the Rev. Thomas Shoemaker presiding. An interment service will be held at All Saints , 700 N. River Road, Des Plaines, IL, on , 26, 2014, at 12:00 P.M. At the request of Joanne and her family, memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Thérèse, Little Flower Parish or the Serra Club of South Bend. To send condolences or share memories, please log on to www.kaniewski.com. For Mom… Eulogy for Joanne Gotsch: 25, 2014 For those of you who attended my Dads funeral, like McArthur, I have returned. For those of you who don know me, Im Joannes oldest son, Mike, and Im being assisted this evening by my brother Tom and my Uncle Jim. My Uncle Jim will first make a few comments about her early years. It hard to believe that it has already been three months since my eulogy of Dad, but its harder to believe that Im doing this again so soon. As difficult as it was to prepare for my Dads eulogy, this has been harder. This one is harder because for his eulogy, I knew my audience. With no disrespect to any of our family or friends who were here and who appreciated what I said, I knew that my ultimate audience and potentially hardest critic would be my Mom. And, just like I have for 56 years, when I was done, I looked to see if she was satisfied with my effort. I hope she will approve of tonights composition. As many of you know, Mom was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 24, 1934, to Joseph and Margaret Matousek. Matousek is a Czech name, which means son of Matthew. My grandfather, Joseph, spoke Czech at home, and didn learn English until he attended school. My grandmother, Margaret, was part Irish and one of her relatives was a firefighter during the Great Chicago fire of 1871. My grandparents met while working at the Commonwealth Edison . married, and my mother was their first child. Being a first child myself, I can say she was a prototypical first child. Her sister, Barbara, and her brother, Jim, can back me up. Alfred Adler, an Austrian Psychiatrist and contemporary of Sigmund Freud, was one of the first to posit that birth order contributed to personality traits. Some sociologists have termed this observation as first born syndrome, which has also been described as Precious First Born or PFB syndrome. Here are some characteristics: (1) she sounds like a mini-adult; (2) thinks she is smarter than her parents by age 10; (3) corrects you when you make a mistake; (4) In charge is her normal state of being; (5) which is followed closely by knowing everything about anything; (6) she is never wrong; (7) she is not hesitant to tell you why she is never wrong, and (8) she is not hesitant to tell you why you are wrong. Although Adlers birth order theory has been greatly debunked by modern research, they may have missed Mom when they were during their field work. These traits also sound like someone who would very much enjoy teaching – be in charge of group of students, have them hang on your every word, and tell them what to do and when to do it. Whatever the reason, we know that Mom studied teaching and received a B.S. in Education from Loyola University Chicago in 1956. She had planned to teach in elementary school, and her externship was with 2nd graders. By the time she graduated from Loyola, she was married to my Dad and he had been deployed by the U.S. Army to Itazuke Air Force Base is Fukuoka, Japan. [Theres a place name you need to pronounce very carefully when you e in Church.] She always said she was continued...

Obituary: Jerry was born on 26, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Clara (Molke) and George Gotsch. He married Joanne Matousek on 21, 1954, at St. Matthias Church in Chicago, Illinois. Surviving to cherish his memory in addition to his wife of nearly 60 years are his two sons, Hon. Michael G. Gotsch, Sr. (Sarah) and Thomas J. Gotsch (Marilyn), nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson. A 1955 graduate of Loyola University (Chicago) in Accounting, he also earned a Masters Degree in Industrial Relations from Loyola in 1963. He served in the United States Army in an Air Defense Artillery battery from 1955–57. Upon leaving military service, he began a career in federal law enforcement. Jerry was an investigator on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in Labor and Management (Rackets Committee) serving under Chief Counsel Robert F. Kennedy. He later joined the U.S. Department of Labor as a criminal investigator and served as Chicago Area Director. He worked on the Organized Crime Strike Force in Chicago, and subsequently coordinated nationwide investigations targeting fraud and organized crime. He was personally recognized by Secretary of Labor with a Special Award for outstanding leadership in supervising the 1972 election of the United Mineworkers of America. He was promoted to Assistant Inspector General for Investigations at the U.S. Department of Labor, and later served in the same capacity with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. For many years, he was an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. A loyal member of the Knights of Columbus, he also volunteered as a Little League coach and a Scoutmaster. He was very proud that both of his sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout, although he frequently mentioned that he had only made it to Second Class. He was the President of the Men of St. Johns at St. Johns High School in Washington, D.C. from 1978-79. Since moving to South Bend in 2002, Jerry has been very involved with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), the Serra Club, and the senior club at St. Thérèse, Little Flower Parish. He loved old western movies, the National Parks, the Chicago Cubs, and the big Island of Hawaii. Late in life, he took up the ukulele and while he may never have been the best in the band there was no one more enthusiastic. But Jerrys number one priority was always his family – he was a loving son, a loyal brother, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He especially enjoyed events involving his grandchildren and great-grandson. He was a ig fish who will be greatly missed by those who knew him, but he lives on in the stories, jokes and humor that he shared with his family and friends. Somewhere a captive in a fortune cookie factory is sending for help. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on , 27, 2014, at 11:00 A.M., at St. Thérèse, Little Flower Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Shoemaker presiding. Friends may call on , 26, 2014, from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M., at Kaniewski , 3565 Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:00 P.M. Friends may also call from 10:00 oclock until the time of the Mass. An interment service will be held at All Saints , 700 N. River Road, Des Plaines, IL, on , 28, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. At the request of Jerry and his family, memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Thérèse, Little Flower Parish, the LaSalle Council of the Boy Scouts of America, or the Serra Clb of South Bend. To send condolences or share memories, please log on to www.kaniewski.com. For Dad… It is axiomatic that you should never represent yourself in court, never operate on a close relative, and never eulogize a parent. I broke the first rule in 1978, when I represented myself in traffic court, but it led to my legal career. I performed first aid on my brother to remove splinters and fish hooks when he was in my scout patrol, and he doesn look too worse for the wear. But this may be the toughest one yet, so please bear with me as I try to go hree for three. For those of you who don know me, Im Jerrys oldest son, Mike, and Im being assisted this morning by my younger brother Tom and my son Mike. What can you say in a few minutes about a life that packed so much living into 83 years? Dad was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 26, 1931, to George and Clara Gotsch. Our only living eyewitness to the blessed event is his older brother, Ken, but as he was only 17 months old at the time, we can excuse him if hes a little fuzzy on some details. From history, we know Dad was born during the teeth of the Great Depression, and if you remember anything from school, the economy was broken and the times were very hard. Times became harder for the family when my Grandfather died in 1943. Ken went to work immediately to support the family; my Dad followed not long after. both went to school and worked on the railroad, and helped support their family and raise their younger sister, Barbara. While families were breaking up across the country and children were being sent to live with relatives or into orphanages, the Gotschs stayed together which explains why his brother and sister were so loved by my Dad and why they remained so close. It is also one of the reasons that he was so generous to charities that support children and orphans. Their childhood experiences help explain the strength and determination that is a hallmark of this side of the family. I know everyone wants me to talk about his funny side, his charming side and his loving side, and I will, but Dad was like a rare continued...
