Obituary: John M. Greer, age 89, of Sandy Springs, GA peacefully passed away on , 25, 2016 after a struggle with poor lung health. John was known as a loving father and grandfather, avid gardener, excellent cook, voracious reader and devoted member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Mary Jane, were members of the church for over 50 years, and John spent 41 of those years as an Usher. John had a deep passion for American history; many friends and family would call him to ask for specific dates of historical events! He also enjoyed building model wooden ships and completing crossword puzzles. John never met a stranger; when friends and family reflect on their time with him, they often reference his huge smile and kind heart. He was known as Papa John to the neighborhood children. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Greer Sr. and Zera Payne, his older brother, Robert L. Greer, and five aunts and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Wheatley Greer, two loving daughters, Susan Patton and Melodie Skinner, and four grandchildren, Shannon Yarbrough, Chris Logan, Lauren Yarbrough and Jana Patton, all of Atlanta. Fondly known as Jack in his hometown of Oglethorpe, GA, John was born on May 18, 1927. the sudden deaths of both his parents, he was raised by his loving aunt, Susie Mae Hollis, and uncle, Tom Hollis in Buena Vista, GA. He left Buena Vista to attend Oxford of Emory University and also attended Emory University. He served in the Navy in World War II and the Korean Conflict. The majority of his career was spent working as an accountant for Sears, Roebuck & , from which he retired in 1993. The family would like to thank the caring and skilled staff at the Halcyon House in Atlanta, GA for the loving care they provided. Obituary: Mrs. Janice Sue Greer, age 71, of Douglasville, GA passed away , 1, 2015. She was born 16, 1943 in Talladega, AL to Leonard and Zola Giddens. Mrs. Greer was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Susie Lynn Greer. Obituary: In Greer family lore, an often repeated story tells about an evangelist who asks the members of a revival congregation to raise their hands if they wanted to go to Heaven. Noticing that one boy did not raise his hand, the preacher inquired, Don you want to go to Heaven when you die? The boy replied, Oh yes, when I die. I thought you were gathering a busload now. During his recent illness, Don often referenced this story by saying he wasn getting on the bus yet. On 17, surrounded by friends, family members and the music of Hank Williams, Sr., Don Greer boarded his bus to join his parents, Samuel and Myrtle Greer, and his nine siblings. Born on 7, 1927, in Red Level, Alabama, or Gods country as he called it, Dons first words may have been Roll Tide! serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, Don moved to Macon where he worked at Armstrong World Industries for 33 years until retirement. As a devoted and active charter member of Central Fellowship Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and school board member. Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Billie; his only child, Donna, always introduced as his favorite daughter; his son-in-law, Dr. Bill Thornton, who served as Dons personal medical advisor; his grandson, Matthew (Katie), who inherited his grandfathers sense of humor; his granddaughter, Jennifer (Dustyn) Ferguson, who inherited her grandfathers gregarious nature; his great grandchildren, Autumn Thornton and Grady Ferguson, his pride and joy. Don also leaves behind one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many good friends, all of whom he treasured. A celebration of Dons life will be held at Central Fellowship Baptist Church, 22, 2015 at 11 am with Pastor Rodney Queen and the Rev. John Prettyman officiating. Burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive visitors , from 5 - 7 pm, at Snows Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Heart of Georgia Hospice, 103 West Ridge Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31088 or a charity of your choice.
