Obituary: Mary Rocha Gutierrez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to so many, lived 88 glorious years on this earth and had a profound effect on all those she knew and touched. Mom celebrated her 88th birthday on 11, 2016, the day before she passed. Mary Lourdes Venegas Rocha, daughter of Benjamin and Maria Rocha, and sister to Ezekiel (Chino), Benjamin, Esther, and Joe Rocha, was born in Turkey Shoot Canyon (Loomis Avenue), Miami, Arizona. For those who don’t know about the legacy of Turkey Shoot Canyon, this was neighborhood filled with wonderful families, many of them related, who remained close over a lifetime. Our Grandmother Maria Rocha’s sister, Lydia Torres, lived there with her husband and her children, Ralph, Frances, Clara, Nalo, Edward, Andrew, and Theresa who were raised as brothers and sisters to my Mom and her siblings. Her sister/cousin Clara was her best friend. Growing up in Turkey Shoot Canyon gave Mom a lifetime of love and support. Mom met the love of her life, our Dad, Frank Gutierrez when she was a senior in high school and Dad had just ended his tour of duty as a decorated WWII veteran. She was a graduate of Miami High School, class of 1946. Mary and Frank Gutierrez were married on 31, 1947 in Miami, Arizona and lived in Miami until they retired to Payson and then Mesa, Arizona. Dad always said the two things he was most proud of were fighting in WWII and marrying our mom. Those who knew Mom and Dad well know that he carried their wedding photo with him to show everyone they met. It was a testament to how much our mother was loved. Recently, Mom celebrated their 69th anniversary with flowers, cake, and love from her devoted husband and family. This was only a few weeks ago. We wish you could have seen her—all dressed up, and so happy to be celebrating with her family. Until the end, Mom never lost her wonderful sense of humor and wit. When one woman at the rehab facility where she was at came over and remarked to her, “You are the most beautiful woman†Mom quipped back, “And I don’t even have my makeup on!†But more about her early life. It will come as no surprise to you that Mom was always a standout in everything she did; although she began school speaking only Spanish, she won the first grade English speaking contest, and was later accelerated in school. She loved school, and education was always a priority for her. She always wanted to be a teacher; she is the source of inspiration for two of her daughters becoming educators. Her daughter, Kris, is a professor at University of California, Berkeley, and her daughter, Vicky, a remarkable special education teacher in Los Angeles. Mom ended up being a teacher. She was a teacher’s aide in title only. For 22 years, she worked with generations of children at Inspiration Addition Elementary School in Miami, teaching children how to read, write, sing songs, and learn. She was loved by her teacher colleagues and her students, and even to this day when she would run into her former students at shopping malls, they would remember her fondly and especially the gift she had in teaching them and, in her gentle way, holding them accountable. It was a career she valued deeply. She was so valued by her colleagues and her colleague/friend, Sue Vaughan, was with her until the end. Mom’s greatest joy was in her children, her grandchildren, and her great grand children. She raised her three children, Kris Gutiérrez of Berkeley, California, James Gutierrez of Globe Arizona, and Vicky Cail, from Los Angeles, California. Mom and Dad made sure we were supported in all we did in school. Mom and Dad never missed one school assembly, sports event, recital, or teachers’ conference for us. Never. Mom became active in the PTA always pushing for something better for children and the schools. Her bake sales, like her cooking, in general, were legendary. Friends, family, and colleagues relished in her meals, from her Cornish pasties, to her Christmas tamales, homemade cakes, candy, and cookies. By all accounts, she was a gourmet cook. Cooking, quilting, playing the piano, collecting dolls, working out regularly with her “Cardiac Club†crew, and attending sports events with Dad were her favorite pastimes. She remained highly engaged in progressive politics and was actively informed until the end. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Frank Gutierrez, her children, Kris, James and Vicky. Her cherished grandchildren include: Summer Gutierrez, Scott Perkins, Reanna Gutierrez, Danielle Monette, Xavier Cail, Julia Ward, Vanessa Gutierrez, James Dean Gutierrez, Autumn Gutierrez, and Sarah Salcido. Her beloved great grandchildren include: Andereya Nsubuga, Akira and Kaiden Perkins, Arabella Monette, Julian and Jesiah Ward, Jacob and Jessie Stover, Jala and Javen Gutierrez. She is survived by her sister, Ester Avalos, of Tempe, Arizona, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. The Mary R. Gutierrez Memorial Scholarship is being established in her name. Mom’s life was celebrated at Christ the King Catholic church in Mesa, Arizona and she was interred at National Memorial of Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona.
