Obituary: Margaret Grays Life Story Margaret was born on 18, 1918 to Anne Marie Herrschaft and Florian Robert Buerger. She was the youngest of three children with an older sister, Roberta Kantoci who was born May 8, 1915 and an older brother, Robert Buerger who was born in 1916. Her parents were separated for most of her life and she did not know her father very well. Her mother did the best she could to raise 3 children with the help of her parents, Margarets grandparents, Anna and Herrschaft. Her grandparents arrived in the US from Germany in 1895. Anna and spoke German and English so Margaret grew up in a bilingual household. When she was 11, her mother and grandparents invested in real estate and built La Bonita apartments on south Main St in Dayton, Ohio. It appeared to be a good investment at the time and the apartments were beautiful and state of the art at the time. The apartments were finished and had just opened when the stock market crash of 1929 occurred. Margaret remembers going with her mother to the bank to try and get her money. However, as a result of that crash, her mother and grandparents lost everything. ended up in bankruptcy. Herrschaft was an officer in the Royal order of Druids. The Druids club decided that they needed a meeting place and a place for their social activities. found property on Bath road in the rural Dayton area. was a brick mason so all of the members of the Druids club donated their services to build a house at Druids Park. did the brick work. When she was 12, Druids Park was finished and her family moved in as care takers. Her childhood memories were of dances that took pkace at Druids Park. There were many dances and festivities that took place. Margaret, Bertie, and Robert had to sweep the dance floor between dance sets and also help clean the place afterwards. There were also memories of gangsters. One morning while waiting for the school bus, all 3 kids witnessed a gangster type car pull up at the far side of the property. Several men got out and went into the woods to bury something while others stood guard. She always thought perhaps it was money from a bank robbery. Dillinger was on the lose in the area at the time but no one every really looked to see what was buried that day. In 1936 she graduated from Fairborn High School. One summer she met Paul Gray who was working for his cousin who lived down the road. The Great Depression was in full swing and jobs were scarce. Morgan Dyer, Pauls uncle, hired him and some of his brothers to expand the basement under the house and help out on the farm. Like any red blooded boy, he was drawn to the dances at Druids Park. His cousin Edna Dyer Karnath happened to be best friends with Margaret Buerger. Margaret and Paul fell in love and were married 20, 1940. remained deeply in love and dedicated to each other for their entire lives. Paul was from Youngstown, Ohio so after their marriage they moved to Youngstown. Paul was employed by Youngstown Sheet and Tube. He worked in the steel mills during WWII as a foreman. On 6, 1944 she had a son, Paul Ormand Gray. He was the light of her life. When baby Paul was just a few years old, Margarets mother became gravely ill. Paul and Margaret struggled with the decision to move to Dayton, Ohio to take care Margarets mother. Margarets mother, Anne, was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Paul unselfishly gave up a very good job in the steel mill to move to Dayton. Anne passed away from the cervical cancer but Margaret was able to be with her til the end and baby Paul got to play with little cars on and around her bedside. So Anne had the chance to meet her grandson. Meanwhile, Paul got a job with Huffman Manufacturing making bicycles. While living in Dayton, Margaret got pregnant with their second child. He was named Joel Douglas Gray and he was born on 27, 1947. When Joel was in the 5th grade, Paul got an opportunity to move to Celina, Ohio when Huffy Manufacturing opened a new state of the art bicycle production facility there. It was a promotion for him and it was hard for Margaret to leave her family in Dayton, but this was too good of an opportunity to pass up. moved to Celina, Ohio and shortly afterwards, Margaret became pregnant again. At this time, she was 39 years old and pregnancy was risky but she decided to trust God and abortions were not really an option then anyway. She gave birth to a daughter who was named Kellie Marlene Gray on 31, 1958. Paul and Margaret had a good life in Celina. Margaret and Paul joined a square dancing club that they danced with on weekends. Margaret was also part of a Pinnocle card club that met once a month. Each of the neighbor ladies would take turns hosting the monthly event in their homes. In later years, they referred to their group as the Hemlock Street Gang. continued to meet to this day although the group gets smaller each year as more members pass away or are unable to attend but they no longer play cards. Margaret retired from the Celina City School System where she worked in the school cafeteria. She had many precious friends that she had worked with in the cafeteria. Paul and Margaret were also members of St Pauls United Methodist Church in Celina. I don remember them missing very many s for the entire time they lived in Celina. were members for continued... |
