Finzel Jr. She is preceded in death by her husband & one son Paul Finely. She is survived by 5 children Jay (Virginia) Finzel Keith (Beth) Finzel , Raymond (Vicki) Finzel , Kenny Finzel & Janelle (Jeff)Cunningham. 6 Grandchildren Stephanie Nalls , Susie Finzel , Kenny Finzel , Todd Finzel , Claire Finzel , Cody Cunningham & one Great Grandchild Harlie Nalls. 2 Step grandchildren Gosta Truman & Natasha Powell. 4 Step great grandchildren Jade Harville, Lindsay Graham, Blake & Mattie Powell. 2 Step great-great grandsons Rylan & Walker Harville. Barbara was a dancer in her youth, a licensed Practical Nurse, an avid bowler and bingo player and regularly donated money to the local casinos. She was a loving wife, dedicated mother, grandmother & great grandmother and considered a mother by many life-long friends of the family. She was a caregiver to her mother Camille Arterburn till her passing at the ripe old age of 99 & was also a caregiver to one of her sisters Dorthy Adams for many years. Obituary: A gathering will take place for the community at the conclusion of Shloshim (Shloshim is the 30 day morning period); details to follow. Age 98 of St. Paul, Minnesota Passed away May 29, 2017, ten days after reaching 98 years of age. Leon, a Holocaust survivor, was born in 1919 in the Carpathian mountain village (shtetl) of Lesko, Poland. In his early 90s, he reflectively understated that hed lived an interesting life. Leon grew up in a close knit Hasidic family that ran an egg export business. In his early teens, he spent two years in Krakow for religious studies. When the economy worsened, he returned to Lesko and worked in the family business until 39 (the German invasion of Poland). Soon after, the region was ceded to the Soviet Union, the Finver home and business was ationalized, and they moved east into the Ukraine. Leon enlisted in the Soviet Army, with duties as a supply officer in a light artillery unit from 1941 through 45; wounded twice, he served from the bloody battles during Operation Barbarossa until entry into Berlin in May 1945. During the war, Leon met his future wife, Rita, who came from the same Polish village and was a nurse in the Soviet Army. As for his family, all (parents, two brothers, two sisters) perished in the Shoah. Leon and Rita lived in a DP (Displaced Persons) camp in Bad Gastein, Austria for nearly three years, marrying in 1946. immigrated to the United States in 1948 to begin a new life together; in New York, then south Jersey, New York (again), retirement for 27 years in Florida and finally, Minnesota in 2011. Leon was preceded in death by Rita (Jan 2016) after 70 years together; as noted above, other immediate family members all perished in the Shoah. Leon is survived by a son, Sheldon Finver (Dee Albert); proud grandfather of David Jared Finver and Ziesel Miriam/Mara Rahimi (Nevo), and one great-grandson, Yedidya Rahimi. Until 1963, Leon earned a living by piggybacking off his background in the egg business. Along with many other Holocaust survivors in South Jersey, he ran a poultry/egg farm, then was an egg supplier delivering eggs to the New York market. Later, he moved his family to New York, where he owned a grocery/deli/appetizing store in the Bronx, followed by co-ownership of a deli/appetizing store in Riverdale. Leon enjoyed finance and investing and was successful in planning ahead. For a number of years, he was a devoted caregiver through Ritas dementia. Life became an emotional struggle from the time they came to Minnesota, and especially after Ritas passing. May he rest in peace now.
