Excerpt from 2005 interview published in "Value Based Leadership, Buying and Selling a Business" by Keith Mcleod Lets go back to the start. You grew up where? How did you get interested in business? I grew up in the Midwest predominately Nebraska and South Dakota. My dad was killed in a construction accident while helping build the WW11 air base at Rapid City, South Dakota when I was seven. My brother and I went to live with my grandparents. Three years later my mother remarried and we survived with my paper route and Social Security survivors insurance. My stepfather was nice, but didn make much money. Ive lived all over the country. I was interested in business from the time I was 10 with paper routes and various other things. Id make crafts and sell them to the neighbors; I was always interested in business. I had a high school education, went into the military, then college. I still wasn sure I wanted to be in business. I started in the engineering department, switched to business, and realized thats where I needed to be. My degree is in business. I came out of college working for Mobil Oil for three years. I moved from a neophyte, to salesman of the year within three years and quit. I just didn relate very well to the corporate culture. It was driven more by the bureaucracy that performance; so three years out of college was my last job where I worked for someone else. From then on I always had my own businesses. I started with consulting firms in the petroleum industry, and moved on to other businesses as my interest level was developed. Every business I had was totally different from the others. I was a new guy each time I got into a different business. I learned the business. This provided my background for going into brokerage. By the time I got to the interest level in brokerage at the age of 40, I had owned a lot of different companies. I worked in businesses throughout the United States and some foreign countries; I sold product around the world, traveled extensively and had a good understanding of business and industry. Did you buy businesses? Start businesses? How did you acquire them? Both. In college I bought a business from a senior who was graduating. I went to college. I was very poor growing up. Very poor. I couldn afford college at all. Went to college on the GI bill after three years in the service, and the GI bill wasn enough to support me, but I had no other income from any sources, so I worked. I worked for a young fellow who was a senior in college when I came in as a freshman; it was a lawn service. When he graduated, I bought it. I paid $600.00 for that lawn service, and that was half a years income for me. I bought his lawn service and within a couple of months I was hiring other people in the fraternity to work for me. I was generating $5.00 an hour and paying them a $1.00 or $1.25 an hour to work for me. That was very successful, and it supported us through college. In fact, when I got out of college and got a real job, I had to take a cut in pay. Thats how I got started. |
