Obituary: Remigio Gomez Fragada

Ray passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, Paraluman (Lou) and two sons Anthony (Tony) and Remigio Jr. (Ray) on 20, 2009.

Ray was born on 14, 1919 in Batangas City, Philippines to Braulio and Rosalia Fragada. Braulio was a teacher and train conductor. He was considered a great speaker and a spoke a deep Tagalog that contained many references to the wonders of nature. Rosalia Gomezs father came from Spain so the family spoke Spanish at home. The family became close as they traveled between Lobo, Batangas City and Manila.

attending two years of college, Ray sensed that a war was impending and went to trade school to become a Radio Operator. Joining the Philippine Army he also thought that Tacloban, Leyte would be an ideal place to be stationed. The collapse of Corregidor, signaled the dissolution of his Army unit but his instincts brought him, a couple of men and the radio genset to the remote farm village of Jaro. The villagers were able to hide them for a while but eventually he alone barefooted his way to the fishing village of Carigara. Much like the Taliban of today, the tribal factions in that area were very dangerous. That survival instinct taught him the ability to listen and learn from the local personages and patrons realizing that a fatal mistake was always around the corner. His knowledge of Wari, Cebuano and Ilongo brought him to the resistance movements in Cebu and Panay. Linked firmly in a amboo telegraph network, he established a newsletter in Carigara that helped the locals understand the status of the war in their area. That communication network brought him to front as MacArthur returned.

At the closing of the war in the Philippines, word came to Batangas City that he was still alive but under an alias Peping Gamboa. Braulio and Celing journeyed by banka bring him home. He had a heroic celebration in Carigara prior to his departure.

This adventure led him to an independent and survivalist outlook that set the tone for the rest of his life. The opportunity to join the Navy brought new horizons and travel. This energy was not dazed by the racial stratification of the day. As far as he was concerned opportunities abound around every ounce of lifes experience. Mr. Valentino loved every second.

The urge to finally settle down came when he remembered a young teacher in Batangas .. and she was available. Following the courtship ritual of the day, he won her heart and brought the beautiful Paraluman back to US in 1950. Tony was born in Pensacola FL (1952). Ray Jr. was born in Norfolk VA (1954). Moving every 2 years eventually brought the family to the West Coast from San Diego to Adak, AK. 20 years of Navy service brought him back to the Philippines . for a short time.

Realizing eal opportunities abounded elsewhere, the family escaped back to Seattle. Seattle became a home base for other siblings to visit and eventually settle. His grandson and his crossing guard experiences eclipsed his 20 years at the US Post Office. Stories and laughter always brightened and guided friendships and acquaintances. Sharing, caring, giving, and adventure continued his last moments of this Earthly life. He will always be a Brave Courageous and Humble Hero to those whose life he touched.

Ray survived the lives of Joselin (Ceiling) and Francisco (Paquito). His remaining siblings: Louisa (Liling), Maria Anita (Maring), Purita (Puring), Gabriel.

The love of his life Paraluman honors not his Perfection but his Holiness.

My name is Rosalie Fragada Camisa. I come up here today to represent my entire family from California and Colorado in expressing our love, sympathy, devotion, commitment and support to our second family, our beloved Uncle Ray or Remigio as we call him dearly or affectionately in Tagalog, Tito Reming.

In thinking of what to write or say, it wasn difficult to begin. As I write this blog, I can help but shed some tears, however, they are more tears of joy for the life hes led more than tears of grief. There have been so many memorable and poignant experiences that come to my mind. My intention today is not to mourn his loss from the physical aspect, but to give tribute to all the wonderful moments he has given and shared with us, the moments when hes made us all laugh, taught us how to live our lives and how to love one another unconditionally. We have all been privy to this over the years and how we have been touched by his kindness, generosity, forgiveness, support, comfort and his love and zest for life!

I first met Tito Ray when I was 15 years old, having lived in the Philippines all my life. One summer in 1975, our family took a vacation to visit the US and made stops in cities where we could visit relatives. When we arrived Seattle, we were welcomed with open arms by Tito Reming and Tita Luming. We were overwhelmed with their kindness and willingness to show us around and how proud they were to share their loving world around them. I met Kuya Tony and Kuya Ray for the first time as well and I felt like I had known them for an eternity! One afternoon, Tito Reming took me on a walk around the park and asked me what my future aspirations were and what my plans were for college. At 15, I hadn even remotely thought that far, I was into playing basketball and like any crazy teenager, just discovered boys! We had a great long heart to heart talk about how it would be great for me to come to the states to study college, what an opportunity he said! In the long run, I could help continued...
