Obituary: Lloyd Alfred Fry, Jr. was born 22, 1918, in a log cabin on the bank of Hamilton Creek in Pleasant Valley near Marble Falls, Texas. My mother was Florence Sanders Fry. I grew up in the central Texas area during the Great Depression. My parents were share croppers. I changed schools twelve times before graduating from Marble Falls H.S. in 1936. At age 14, I ran away from home and hoboed on freight trains (including riding the blinds on passenger trains) over a large part of the U.S. I spent one month working in the fire lanes in the mountains of California to avoid being sent to jail for vagrancy. As a result of counseling by an uncle in Phoenix, I returned home and finished my meager formal education. My first job after high school was working on the construction of Buchanan Dam in 1936 and '37. In 1937 I was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad as a brakeman. For many years I worked part time as a brakeman with many unpaid furloughs during which I worked as a construction ironworker. I was a member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, & Ornamental Ironworkers, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. In 1941, I married Dorothy Agnes Pippin. In 1939 and 1940 I attended the Civilian Pilot's Training Program, obtaining a private pilot's license. My instructor pilot was Bob Browning at his University Airport on Hwy 81 in North Austin. His pilot's license was number 984. He was one of the old guard. On 12, 1941, I was sworn into the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. I received my wings and commission in 1943. more training, I flew B-24's in the Southwest Pacific Theater with the 380th Bomb Group 5th Air Force. I flew 330 hours of combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal and two oak leaf clusters. I served for 3 years during WW II and was a member of the Air Force Reserve after leaving active duty in 1946. During the Korean Conflict I was recalled to active duty and served another three years with the Training Command as an instructor pilot training cadets. While not on active duty with the Air Force, I worked as a brakeman and conductor on the S.P. railroad. I retired from the Air Force in 1960 as a Command Pilot and Lieutenant Colonel. I became a member of the Baptist Church, thanks to the beneficial influence of my wonderful wife. On 1951 I became a Master Mason, 32nd degree Scottish Rite and a member of Ben Hur Shrine. I was a past master of Liberty Hill Lodge 432 AF& AM. Perhaps the Supreme Architect of the Universe will accept me into the Celestial Lodge. I retired from my job with the S.P. railroad in 1980 and lived on our ranch on the South San Gabriel near Liberty Hill until 2014 when I went to live at the Bertram . I am survived by my sister and brother, Helen Cooke and David Fry as well as my as well as my daughter, JoAnn Doak and my two grandsons, William Adolph Behrens and Kelly Joe Behrens. The family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 12:00 P.M. -12:30 P.M. , 1, 2015 at Cook-Walden Davis in Georgetown with funeral services to follow at 12:30 P.M. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill in Liberty Hill. by Cook-Walden/Davis , 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 (512)863-2564. |
