Obituary: Joseph Lee "Joe" Van Fleet, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully in the company of his daughters on evening, 4, 2017 in Hurst, Texas. Joe was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 15, 1923. He grew up working in his dad's store, but once he took a ride in a bi-plane, he knew that he would spend his life as a pilot. Flying and his beloved Elaine, his wife of 65 years, were his passion throughout his life. From bi-plane lessons in a corn field, to King Ranch pilot, to corporate jets for Exxon, Joe accumulated over 50 years of flying without a single accident. His flying accomplishments earned him the prestigious Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA. Joe joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and began flying the T-6 Texan and P-38 fighter. He worked his way up to B-17 Bombers and was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 305th Bomb Group, 365th Squadron in Chelveston, England. There he piloted the "Leap-year Lady" through many of his 35 combat bombing missions over Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three oak clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. A gentle, sweet and humble man, he saw his military service as simply doing his job. the war, Joe married his sweetheart, Ruth Elaine Adams who preceded him in 2010. Joe never knew a stranger and was deeply loved by all who knew him. Our lives were so very blessed by his presence. Today he has a new pair of wings and is reunited with his beloved Elaine. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Patrice and Tom Roseland of Merritt Island, Florida; daughter Anita Lee Van Fleet Tallent of Hurst, Texas; granddaughters Lindsay Roseland, Valerie Roseland, and Courtney Kanagy and husband Matthew Kanagy, all of Orlando, Florida. Joe also had one great-grandson, Jonah Kanagy and a second great-grandson is due in May. Joe had requested a very small and simple service. It will be conducted by his niece, Reverend Donna Strieb at at Bluebonnet Hills and Memorial Park in Colleyville, Texas on morning, 10, 2017 at 11:00 AM. |

Obituary: Brig. Gen. Ret. Kenneth Raymond Fleenor passed away on 10, 2010 after a lengthy illness surrounded by his loving family. Ken was born in 1929, the son of Alberta Burch and Nelson Fleenor. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Nelson Fleenor, Francis Fleenor, and Robert Fleenor, sister Angela Fleenor, grandson John Duc, and granddaughter Anne Duc. Ken Fleenor was born and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He graduated from Western Kentucky State University in 1952. Following graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and reported for active duty in 1952. He earned his pilot wings later that year. His 28 year career in the Air Force took him all over the world and brought him much joy in flying his airplanes and serving his beloved country. In 1967, 13 missions short of fulfilling his quota of missions in Vietnam, his F-4 Phantom fighter jet was shot down near Hanoi. He was captured and spent 5 years and 3 months in North Vietnamese prisons. Enduring unimaginable starvation, isolation, and torture, his faith in God helped him survive these conditions. He was released from captivity in , 1973 at the end of the war and continued his Air Force career. Moving the family to Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he served as Instructor Pilot, Wing Deputy Commander of Operations, Base Commander, Wing Commander, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of Air Training Command before retiring. In his retirement he worked for the Governor of Texas as Regional Coordinator of the Texans War on Drugs covering 59 counties in South Texas. He later became the General Manager of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and and the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum. Ken served on the Board of Directors of USAA, USAA Federal Savings Bank, USAA Real Estate , and the Retama Entertainment Group. He also served on the Selma City Council 1984-1987, and as Mayor of Selma 1987-1994. He was recently honored by the West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce for his role in the issuance of tax exempt bonds that were used to build Retama Park which produced 1, 500 jobs during live racing. Kens foresight and vision led to the economic growth in the area and the business boom that included thousands of new homes and the development of the Forum shopping center. Ken loved flying airplanes, earning his commercial license before retiring from the Air Force. He was a avid golfer. He was an accomplished water skier, imitating performers at Cypress Gardens in his younger years. He is survived by Anne Elizabeth Read Fleenor, his loving wife of 59 years, his children, Katherine Thomas and husband Duane, John Fleenor and wife Mary, Patricia Wood and husband James, Kerry Horne, and Kay Duc and husband Michael; his grandchildren, Nicholas Thomas, Emily Thomas, Kenneth Fleenor II and wife Laura, James Fleenor and wife Patricia, Stephen Fleenor and wife Kahli, Christine Young and husband Jim, Michael Wood, Brian Wood, Meagan Brooks and husband Caleb, Clinton Horne, Leigh Anne Duc; great grandchildren Weston Brooks and Waylon Brooks; and his sisters, Martha Gibbs, Patricia Day, and Joanne Ruff and husband Ed. Ken was a beloved father to his children, Papa to his grandchildren, and devoted husband to his precious Anne. He was ever-faithful to his family, his country and his God. He will be missed by his family and many friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Sayed Ali from BAMC for his support and expert care and Annalisa Sierleja, RN and the nurses from Vista hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association at www.phassociation.org or to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.support.woundedwarriorproject.org. Visitation will be held on from 5-7 p.m. at Porter Loring Morturaries on 1604 in San Antonio. Obituary: Anne Elizabeth Read Fleenor was born on 20, 1931, in Scottsville, KY, and passed away peacefully on 19, 2012. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ken Fleenor, with whom she spent almost 60 years, granddaughter Anne, and grandson, John. She attended Western Kentucky University, where she met and married Ken in 1951. He was the love of her life, and their zeal and admiration for each other was absolute. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren were blessed with her devotion to family, her sage advice, and her unwavering strength. She modeled poise, integrity, and an incomparable ability to rise above adversity. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always fun to be with., a southern gentlewoman with elegance and class. Anne was first and foremost a wife and a mother. She survived many hardships in her life, including raising five children on her own, ranging in age from 7-15, for over five years while Ken was first missing, then declared a prisoner of war in Vietnam. She was reunited with him in of 1973, and they spent the next 36 years traveling, spending time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and living and loving life together. Anne and Ken had a multitude of friends from all over the world. Few could claim even half the number of the friends that they had. She was loyal to her friends, and was looked up to as a mentor, a confidante, and a wise and thoughtful advisor. Anne is survived by her daughter, Kathy and husband Duane; son, John and wife Mary; daughter, Patti and husband James; daughter, Kerry; and daughter Kay and husband Mike. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nick, Emily, Kenneth, Jimmy, Stephen, Christi, Michael, Brian, Meagan, Clinton, and Leigh Anne; great-grandchildren, Brennon, Weston, Waylon, Kenny and Catie.
