Obituary: Colonel Victor J. Ferrari, retired USAF officer, former USAA senior executive officer and president of the USAA Federal Savings Bank, passed away May 5, 2007, at the age of 91. He was born 24, 1916 in Marion Heights, Pennsylvania, one of 8 children born to Jacob and Catherine Arnoldin Ferrari. Vic was born, his family moved to Kulpmont, Pennsylvania where he attended elementary school and graduated from Kulpmont High School in 1934. At Kulpmont High, he was very active in school, including lettering on the SchoolÂs varsity football team. His mother wanted him to go to college, but wanting to help his widowed mother, Vic refused and went to work. working seven days a week for $12 at a gas station, Vic decided his mother was right after all and agreed to go to college. Ferrari went to Bloomsburg State Teachers in Pennsylvania. He attended for two years and tried to join Aviation Cadets. Failing the medical exam because of high blood pressure, he stayed at Bloomsburg and graduated in 1939 with a B.A. in Education and began to teach. In 1942, with the war in full fury, the Aviation Cadets took him in and he began what was to be a very successful career in the Air Force. He trained as a bombardier and a navigator and was assigned to B-24 Liberator bombers. He then went to England as a member of the 578th Squadron, 392nd Bomber Group, 8th Air Force. On 13, 1943, he flew on his first combat mission to bomb Bremen, Germany. Losing one engine to anti-aircraft fire and a second to an ME-110, his B-24 aircraft began to lose altitude and the pilot ordered the crew to bail out over Holland. With the help of the Underground and after more than five months of harrowing adventures avoiding capture by the Gestapo, Nazi troops, and German sympathizers, Ferrari made his way to Spain and safety. In 1944, Ferrari returned to the US via England. serving as a navigator instructor in Louisiana and Texas, the Air Force gave him a choice of assignments because he had been shot down. He chose Middletown, PA, which was close to family and next the University of Southern California/ Los Angeles where he earned a MasterÂs Degree in Psychology. From there he was assigned to Ellington Air Force Base, Texas, to try to solve a very serious dropout problem among aviation cadets. He succeeded. His CommanderÂs evaluation read that ÂFerrari had more leadership in his little finger than most people have in their entire bodies. Ferrari then showed his compassion when he volunteered to take a remote assignment to Saudi Arabia in the place of a married officer with a family. From there he was assigned to teach psychology at the Air Force Academy and after two years, he was selected to pursue a Ph.D. in Psychology at Denver University. At this time, the USAF Academy Dean of Faculty, Colonel Robert F. McDermott, was looking through some officers records to find a badly needed Assistant Dean. Once he saw the quotation on FerrariÂs leadership, McDermott asked Ferrari to volunteer to return to the Academy to take the job. Ferrari agreed and served the Dean for six years and then stayed at the Academy for two more years as the Deputy Commander of Cadets. His last three USAF assignments were as Deputy Commander of Operations and Training at Mather AFB, Professor of Air Science at the University of Notre Dame and as Vice Commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio. Ferrari retired from the Air Force in 1971 when McDermott offered him a position to set up a Training Department at USAA in San Antonio. He then served various senior executive positions at USAA that included Training and Development, Human Resources, Chief of Staff, and Federal Savings Bank President. retirement from USAA, McDermott immediately hired Ferrari to begin and operate a USAA Mentor Program. USAA volunteers would serve as mentors to at-risk students in San Antonio ISD. Beginning with 67 mentors in two schools, the program rapidly grew under his direction and the number of USAA mentors ran into the hundreds. With McDermottÂs encouragement, Ferrari helped other organizations and institutions in San Antonio to begin mentor programs of their own. His initiative continued even after his retirement as head of the USAA mentor program in 1993. By 1997, over 2700 community mentors had joined to mentor in the City with those from USAA. At one point, Ferrari was a member and a leader of 17 different education and public service committees. He helped energize the CityÂs 225-READ program to improve adult literacy in the community. The City of San Antonio and the nation were grateful for his efforts. Unknown to most of the hundreds of children and families he helped, he deserved the recognition that the modest hero did not seek and tried to avoid. In 1992, President Bush selected Ferrari for the 943rd national ÂPoint of Light award and in of 2005 the city dedicated the Victor J. Ferrari Literacy . Ferrari was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers Isadore, Alfred, and William; and his three sisters Barbara Arnoldin, Esther etti, and Adeline Pakoskey. His wife Doris Gene Alber Ferrari survives him, as do her three daughters and their husbands, Jane and Joseph Reinke of Mounds View, Minnesota, Susan and Steve Brizius of North Royalton, Ohio, and Rebecca ÂBecky and Douglas Smock of San Antonio, Texas. His beloved grandchildren by marriage, Joseph and Jesse Reinke, Sarah and Jennifer Brizius, and Megan and Casey Smock also survive him. He always said that being called ÂGrandpa brought him one of the greatest joys of his life. In addition, his brother Jack Ferrari from Philadelphia also survives him. He will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Victor J. Ferrari Memorial Scholarship Fund, San Antonio Area Foundation, 110 continued...

Obituary: I was a rose; simple, beautiful, sweet, and with thorns. No matter what name you knew me by, Susanne Michelle Ferrari, or just Shelly, I was always just as sweet. Grown, raised, nurtured by the love of my family, my father Don, my mother Jean, my brother Rick to be a unique specimen within a garden of others. Though my leaves and petals are now gone, I'm always there, just close your eyes and see me, take a deep breath and smell me. I was a rose, whose winter came too early.

Obituary: Margaret Mary Frances Long Ferrara, born 19th 1924 in St. Paul, Minnesota to James and Amelia Long, passed away on All Saints Day, , 1st at 6:45 am in her home surrounded by family and much love. The sixth of seven children, Margaret (Marge) was raised and educated in St. Paul; first at St. Marks Catholic primary school and later at Derham Hall Girls Preparatory and Boarding School. At age 23 with a burgeoning sense of adventure and love of travel, she began a nine month intensive training program to become an airline stewardess; a decision that truly molded her future. She flew first for Northwest Airlines, then transferred to TWA and was based in Newark, NJ. Marge met her future husband, Michael R. Ferrara, a WWII Army Air Corps Veteran, while on a double date with a girlfriend during a layover flight. At the time, Mike was a Captain with Mid-Continent Airlines and was based in Kansas City where Marges flight schedule placed her on frequent layovers. Marge transferred to Kansas City shortly thereafter and ten months later, she and Mike were married. Unfortunately, this brought her flying career to an end due to restrictions preventing airline attendants from being married. Mike continued to fly for Mid-Continent and later for Braniff International in Dallas for a total of 35 years before retiring. Seven children were born in Kansas City with the last two children born in Dallas. Marge had once said "It was a good thing Mike found me because the Ferrara name would have ended without our children." Daily life for Marge as a homemaker and mother of nine was centered and around the care and feeding of her family; especially the feeding. With eleven in the family, she prepared 33 meals a day, excluding snacks, comprised of breakfast in the morning, afternoon lunch and dinner- served promptly at 6:00 pm with all family members present. A typical dinner could consist of five fry chickens, three pounds of potatoes and vegetables, a few other side dishes and dessert. During the holidays, thirty-five for a seated dinner was not uncommon. Marge smiled once when she said she met a woman in later years who told her she had eaten Thanksgiving dinner at her home. All Marge could say was, "you did?" In addition to eating well and becoming a fine Italian cook (thanks to her much-loved mother-in-law Crocifissa Ferrara), the values of a loving home, family and a good education were grounded in a strong Catholic faith. All nine Ferrara children were offered four full years of university education fully financed by Mike and Marge causing her to once quip ".and thats the reason I don have a fine silver collection! We put nine children through college - my kids are my real silver." During their retirement years Marge and Mike ramped up the use of their well worn passports with extensive travel throughout Europe, Mexico, South America, the Virgin Islands in addition to criss-crossing America; a source of great joy and excitement for both of them. Marge is predeceased by Mike, her husband of 43 years and survived by her silver collection: Son, Mike Ferrara and wife Janet and children Sophia, Angelo and John with his wife Sylvia; Daughter Mary Ferrara; Son Dr. Matthew Ferrara and wife Dr. Christine Ferrara and children Luke and Bella; Daughter Ann Basilone and husband John with their daughter Jaclyn; Daughter Gina Ferrara and her daughter Tiffany Yarley; Daughter Barbara Ferrara; Son James Ferrara and his partner David Griffin, Son Richard Ferrara and his wife Dr. Jean Ferrara and children James Michael and Julia, son Thomas Ferrara with his wife Sara who are doing their part to ensure the longevity of the Ferrara name with children Alec, Savannah, Ian Michael, Anton, Kajsa Cecilia and Elizabeth Amelia. In addition to her children, Marge is survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and the friends of her children all of whom she has adopted in spirit as well as her treasured and beloved sister Carmelita Ann Long Peil of St. Paul, Minnesota; the last of her cherished siblings. Visitation shall be on , 5th from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a Rosary scheduled for 7:00 pm at Sparkman/Hillcrest on Northwest Highway. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rita Catholic Church, 12521 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas 75244 at 10:00 am on , 6th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret Ferraras name to St. Rita Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
