Obituary: born 4, 1924 in the Azores, passed away 18, 2011. Deolinda was a resident of Arcata. She loved to crochet and knit, she sewed for many years. One of her favorite hobbies was to tend to her garden. She often traveled to the Azores to visit her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters Maria Albertina Furtado and Deolinda Sousa, brother Fransisco Goulart of Canada, grandchildren Gary Sousa and Leonilda McLaughlin, Great grandchildren Darissa and Elora McLaughlin. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers include Teodoro Fraga, Fernando Silva, Jose M. Avelar, Justin McLaughlin, Joao De Matos, and Mickael Fraga. A visitation will be held on , 22 from 5:00-7:00 with a Rosary at 7:00 at Pauls Chapel. Mass will be held 23 at St Marys Church in Arcata with Father Gerry officiating. A graveside service will follow at St Marys . The family would like to give a special "Thank you" to the staff at Eureka care and Wellness for all of the care and attention given to Deolinda in her final days. Specifically the aides Joan and Betty who showed great kindness and support to her family at the time of Deolindas passing. |

Obituary: David Joaquim de Resendes Freitas Was born May 26 of 1925, in the small village of Algarvia, in the island of S. Miguel, Azores. He was the son of Maria do Carmo Resendes (Amaro) and Horacio Freitas. Since his parents never married, he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Mariana Jacinta Resendes Amaro and his uncle Dionisio. His young mother went to work in the city of Ponta Delgada to support him, since the family was extremely poor. He often recounted his life story to his children and grandchildren, with such vivid details that it felt as if you were there. In part, we now summarize his vast oral history, in remembrance of him. As young as six he went barefoot, rain or shine to the hills to pick wood from the woods for his grandmothers stove. Many times, he mentioned the fact that because his grandmother had only one tooth left, she would eat the insides of the bread and he always ate the crust with his soup, if he was lucky enough to have some that day. As a teenager, David became a hard working entrepreneur, taking advantage of the extreme shortage of fuel during World War II. He was very successful at making coal which was sent by bus to the city, earning him more in daily wages that an adult man was making cultivating the fields of the Green Island. This made his grandmother very happy, and helped the family get by during those very difficult years. At the age of eighteen, he went to live in Fenais dAjuda to work for his father. Having been given a pile of old metal to recycle into chains, he was forced to invent a device to untwist and cut the metal in order to efficiently manufacture the chains. Although this was a source of work and pride for himself, his personal profits from this venture were few, and disillusioned he decided to find alternative possibilities in construction, in the island of Terceira. He lived with a family that had taken him in and he was always grateful for their hospitality. Shortly after his return to Fenais dAjuda, S. Miguel, he met Deolinda Maria Correia. had a long courtship which lasted seven years. His future father-in-law disapproved of his daughters choice which prevented their marriage until after his death. In those days, many people were immigrating to both Canada and Angola, looking for work. Upon learning of job opportunities in which he could make use of his skills, he decided to go to Angola in search of a better life around 1954. There he worked in a variety of jobs, from making truck deliveries through the jungles of Africa to working with cranes to build the high riser buildings in the city of Luanda. David and Deolinda were married by proxy on 8, 1956, her brother Jose Correia stood in for the groom. Deolinda left the Azores and docked in Luanda on Davids birthday that year. By the time Antonio was born on 1st, 1957, they had moved to Nova Lisboa, Wambu. A business opportunity working with tractors in agriculture came up, and they returned to Fenais dAjuda, so he could start his own business. were excited with the arrival of their daughter, Maria da Conceicao who was born 4th, 1959. Four years later at the height of their hometown religious celebration, daughter Ana was born on 16th, 1963. Less than a year later, Luis was born on 8th. Another business opportunity was presented when Davids sister and brother-in-law made the decision to immigrate to the USA. He purchased their general store, which became his wifes passion and their main bread and butter until they left the island. His wife had inherited land from her family, which traditionally would have been planted with potatoes, wheat or other crops, but instead David began planting pasture and corn to feed Holstein milk cows. This business venture grew and became very lucrative. He was in the forefront of the dairy innovation such as the use of silage and raising the calves separate from the mothers. The Portuguese revolution of 1974 and the political unrest that followed were one of the main reasons the couple immigrated to the U.S.A. The other was the fact that their son Antonio had come the year before. The rest of the family joined him in of 1975 where they then lived in a small trailer which was parked at the property of his employer Dan Coelho. Soon, David and Deolinda purchased their home in Hilmar, California and moved in 16th, 1975. lived there ever since raising their family. Of foremost importance to this couple was their childrens higher education. David often spoke of how this was a very important reason for his wanting to come to the United States, since he knew it would be out of his reach to send all four of his children to the continent, as Portugal was know to the Azorean people, to study. He often told his children the story of how he quit school at the start of second grade, and then sorely regretted it when all his friends could read, write, and do arithmetic and he could not. He had the courage to ask a nice neighbor to help teach him those things. To say the least, one of his biggest passions involved impressing upon his grandchildren his wish to see them succeed in school and college. Once in the U.S.A., the focal elements which the Freitas couple wanted to instill in their children were their Catholic faith, the Portuguese, language, and culture . Once they learned that there was a very active Portuguese Catholic parish nearby, they became members of Our Lady of the Assumption in Turlock. With their encouragement their teenage children were active in such church activities as youth group, English liturgy, music ministry, folk dancing, and continued... |
