Obituary: Clarissa Dee Williams Farnsworth was born in Casper Wyoming on 14, 1926. She was the first child of David Dee Williams and Alma Jane Hand Williams. Fourteen months later she was joined by her sister Barbara Lee. When Clarissa was 21 months old and her sister was 7 months old their mother died at the age of 23 years 3 days. When she was four years old their father remarried, and they were soon joined by a half- brother named Max, and a half- sister named Mary Alice. When Clarissa was five years old she started taking violin lessons. Her father was a gifted musician on the saxophone and clarinet, so all the children were given music lessons. Clarissa played in the Vancouver symphony for a time. She graduated from Natrona High School in 1944, and then came west to Portland Oregon to live with her aunt and enter nursing school. Because there was a shortage of nurses due to the 2nd World War, President Roosevelt ordered the formation of the Cadet Nurse Corp. All the tuition, board and room as well as a small stipend were paid for all applicants to nursing schools. That was the only way she was able to get into nursing, which is something she had wanted to do her whole life. She was in the first nurses class at Providence Hospital in Portland in 1947. She married Victor Foglio that year. To this union four children were born; Victor David, Jerry Al, Donald Dee and Jeanette Lee. Victor died in 1970. Clarissa went back into nursing, but because she had been out for so long she repeated her nursing education at Clark in Vancouver Washington. She then went on to receive her B.S. in nursing from Walla Walla , and a M.S.Ed. from Portland State University. Her specialty was cardiology and critical care; she worked for several years at Providence Hospital in these areas. In 1970 she developed heart problems due to having diphtheria as a child. She was one of the youngest pacemaker patients her doctors had, and she had many replacements over the years including up to the present time. She gave up hospital nursing due to the physical stress and started teaching nursing at Portland Community and later after moving to Vancouver she taught at Clark . She taught seniors for six years and then volunteered at Clark Department giving flu shots and performing screening studies. In 1977 she married her soul mate Theodore M. Farnsworth. Ted was a commercial fisherman and every spring when school was out Clarissa went to Alaska to fish on the boat with Ted. She lived there on their big boat and did all the cooking and manned radios. She made many friends in the fishing community. Ted passed away in 2004. Clarissa belonged to the Oregon and Washington Nurses Associations, the Oregon heart Association, Nurses Education Committee, Clark Genealogy Society, Salmon Creek United Methodist Church, Portland Toastmistress at BPA, Stephen Ministry and DAR. She had done needlework since she was a little child; making many of her clothes and uniforms as well as for her daughter. She did spinning, knitting and felting, making many hats. She loved to can food, cook, garden and travel. She and Ted did a lot of traveling around the United States, visited the Holy Land and took several trips to Hawaii. She is survived by children David, Jerry, Don, Jeanette Kostrba and their spouses; ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Barbara Lee Roduner and Mary Alice Talbert and brother Max Williams. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on , May 31, 2014 at the Salmon Creek United Methodist Church, 12217 NE Highway 99, Vancouver, WA 98686. She will be laid to rest at Gethsemani Catholic , Happy Valley Oregon. under the direction of Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes, Portland, OR. |
