Obituary: Callista Madalene Fortier (née Oster), 94, passed away at home on May 9, 2017, with her son at her side, just short of her 95th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Matthew Fortier and all of her siblings: John, Gerald, Adrian Joseph, Mary Magdalene, Mary Marguerite, Patricia, Dennis, Ann, Vince and Craig. Madalene was born May 28, 1922, to John Joseph and Eliza Jane Oster and raised in Stratton, Ontario, Canada. She moved to Detroit in 1946, taking on the principal responsibility of caring for her ailing mother. Madalene was the beloved mother of two sons who predeceased her, Joseph and Raymond, and four surviving sons, Paul, John, Matthew and Philip; their spouses, and a dear grandmother and great-grandmother. She will also be missed by her large family and many dear friends. Callista Madalene was a lifelong Catholic and deeply devoted to the Church. Despite many trials, she remained steadfast in her faith and dedicated herself to helping others in need. She was especially committed to the Legion of Mary, Lay Carmelites, Christian Family Movement, the Capuchins and the Cursillo Movement. Along with her husband, whom she had met at the church, Madalene was instrumental during the early days of Our Lady of Victory Church, a mission that served African Americans in Detroit. She was strongly committed to rectifying racial and social injustice, at a time when few took those risks. In 1975, as a result of a car accident her husband died, leaving her to continue raising six sons on her own. She strongly believed in Catholic education, sending all her children to parochial schools, despite financial hardships. further training, Madalene took a job as a legal secretary and court recorder, a job she retired from after 17 years. She continued to run her own income tax preparation business. Although suffering greatly from physical illnesses, for many years, Madalene kept her keen sense of humor and radiated a contagious joy for life. She loved people and was beloved by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Missionaries of Charity (motherteresa.org), Defeat MSA (defeatmsa.org), or Catholic Relief Services (crs.org). Obituary: Edith (Vanden Bos) Forth - Went home to be with her Lord on 18, 2015 age 97. Preceded in death by husbands, Evert J. Vanden Bos I and William E. Forth. Survived by her son, Evert J. (Bonnie) Vanden Bos II of Ohio and their children David (Toni) Vanden Bos and Daryl (Amber) Vanden Bos: great grandchildren, Drew, Zach, Kate, Brooke, and Lynsie of Ohio. Also surviving is daughter, DVonne (Douglas) Yonnick and their children Amee Durst (Ursula Good), Brian (Jessica) Yonnick, Kirsten (Kevin) Trudell: great grandchildren, Kaylee Durst, Leilah Smith, Adia and Cruz Yonnick, Logan and Alanah Trudell. She was a longtime member of the South Jackson Community Church. She previously managed the Sveden House in Jackson and after retiring was active in the community as P.T.A. Past President and Regional Coordinator, serving on numerous boards. She was a volunteer at Allegiance since 1983, active member of A.A.R.P. since 1976, was a recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award in 1995, received the 10 Who Award from the Governor in 1997, received a 50 years of service award for the American Red Cross in 1998 (and continued serving 10 more years), in 2000 she received the Jackson Senior Citizen of the Year, and in 2008 she was the volunteer of the year for R.S.V.P. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on , 23, 2015, at 1:00pm with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of service. Entombment will be at Roseland Memorial Gardens in Jackson, Michigan. A special thank you to the staff of John Gantons Countryside and Allegiance Hospice for their loving and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Allegiance Hospice. |
