Obituary: Robert Gerald Franke, 85. CHATHAM - Robert Gerald Franke, 85, of Chatham, Massachusetts, passed away on 24th after a long and fulfilling life. Born on Staten Island, New York on 26, 1926, Bob grew up during the Depression, moving up and down the eastern seaboard with his family as his father searched for work as a pipefitter. An outstanding math student and city champion in track, Bob graduated from Port Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1944, entering the Navys V-12 officer program anticipating service in World War II. Bob studied at both Dartmouth University and Tufts University as part of his training, and it was at Tufts that he met Mary Elizabeth Block, the love of his life for sixty-one years. serving in the Navy from 1946-47, Bob finished his B.A. at Tufts and decided to become a math teacher. In 1950, Bob married Mary on Fools Day, and then began what would become 35 years service in education. His first assignment was at Chatham High School from 1950-1957. Bob left Chatham in 1957 to teach a modern mathematics program at Great Neck North High School in Great Neck Long Island. Three years later Bob was recruited to teach at Newton South High School In Newton, Massachusetts. While at Newton South, Bob contracted with Harvard University to teach in the Comprehensive High School in Aiyetoro, Nigeria. For two years, Bob taught math, helped build a math curriculum for the school, and served as shadow administrator who assisted his Nigerian counterparts with administration. His family was with him every step of the way, and brought back wonderful memories of Nigeria and her people that in so many ways shaped their lives in later years. Once back at Newton South, Bob built a career as a math teacher who helped introduce the ew math curriculum, as a coach for JV Basketball, varsity soccer and tennis and, in the latter half of his career, as the administrative assistant to the principal. As an educator, he built a reputation as a good natured teacher who worked very hard on behalf of his students and as a colleague who stood up for what he believed, maintained the highest standard of professionalism. As a coach, he was lauded by Will McDonough of the Boston Globe as the philosophical, pipe-smoking gent who coached varsity tennis to many league championships and three state titles between 1968 and 1971. When he retired from Newton South in 1985 he had the respect and admiration of students and educators who often sought his counsel for some time after he left. Bob retired to Chatham in 1985, but he did not retire from service. For 32 years he was known to the hardy citizens of North Beach as constant presence with the Chatham Police Departments beach patrol. He retired from special duty in 1998, and gave his full time to traveling with Mary and to cheering on his grandsons Will and Greg in soccer, basketball, and baseball along with their mother Suzanne and father Roger. All the while, his role as advisor never stopped. As both Suzanne and Donald began their own careers in education, they often sought and welcomed his advice. Bob is survived by his wife Mary, his children Suzanne and Donald, his grandchildren Will and Greg, Wills wife Megan, and the many people he inspired with his integrity, fairness, patience, and joy for life. Burial will be private. |
