Obituary: SHREVEPORT, LA - Don, as most people knew him, finally tired of his long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, and diabetes on 2, 2014 at 3:14 PM, while attending a rehabilitative facility in Fort Worth, TX.
services will be held at 11:00 AM on , 5, 2014 at Centuries Memorial located on Mansfield Road in Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be ministers Wayne Fussell of Midway Church of Christ, Bobby Cunningham of Queensborough Church of Christ, and Phillip Prince from Jacksonville, FL. Interment will follow at Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on , 4, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Centuries Memorial .
Don was known for being many wonderful things, almost to a passionate fault. Having known him at some point in his life, is to know his fervent faith in God, love of Jesus Christ, competitive spirit, athletic mind and body, sentimental heart, desire to spend time with family and friends (new or old), and penchant to ensure you 'just understand' his point of view.
First and foremost, Don ensured his family would never go without. Don retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of dedicated employment. He provided well for his family and was able to afford a modest living where he opened his heart and home to many others.
Don had a lifelong love affair with the game of baseball. He managed to parlay that love into a talent to play the game, as well as manage several semi-professional and American Legion teams around the Shreveport/Bossier City area during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, including Shreveport Trucking, Kellys Truck Terminal, and R.C. Cola, to name a few.
Later in life, he changed his passion for baseball into a storied turn with amateur slow-pitch softball. There he managed to collect two mens world championships with Depot and CW&W contractors, as well as several city, state, and regional championships with teams such as Charlie Yellens, 21st Century , and Hayden . During this time, he also permeated the local love of slow-pitch softball by holding various levels of directorships with NSA, ISA, and USSSA associations and hosting numerous tournaments or leagues.
Don was an ardent fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Although he attended many regular season games over the years, he finally fulfilled a lifelong dream by attending Game 3 of the 2011 World Series against the Texas Rangers with his son.... and yes, they won.
Don was a hospitable, family man. Whether you played ball for him, worked with him, or befriended his children, he would always welcome you into his home. He considered himself a peoples person and wanted to share anything he had with you just to ensure quality time together. Big dinners or just sitting around a table talking, served him endless joy. And whatever he was eating, you would certainly be offered a bite of mine.
Don might have been afraid of heights, but he was not afraid to show his sentimental side. His Christmas and birthday cards were short novels, salty from the tears that welled up when reading his thoughts and perspectives. He loved music so much-ballads, of course-that he would record those sentimental tracks into his own variety of mediums in 8-tracks, cassettes, and CD formats. Long before loyalty programs were the norm, he was a regular customer at Stans Record Shop (Jewella Avenue) where he purchased 100s of vinyl 45s, or albums if they had enough good uns on there.
Don was a traveler. Rather, he just loved to go places, and because he would never fly or get on water where you couldn see the shoreline, his travels were most likely to his regional favorites \ like Hot Springs, St. Louis, or the Ozarks mountains. Nonetheless, even up until his last days, Don was always looking forward to a trip here or there to see someone. But if the schedule did not permit, just take him umming around, preferably where they have the electric scooters, and let him see people.
Don was a loving father, brother, and most importantly a husband. He is preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife of 54 years, Frances R. Farrar. He is also preceded in death by his father, Thomas Winston Farrar; mother, Stella Lizzie Rains; and sister, Margie Kelly. He will be remembered by his older sister, Dorothy Centorbi; daughter Jodi Farrar Gaines and husband Raymond; son, Khoury Farrar and wife Staci; son, Randall Farrar; grandchildren, Michael Stephen Gaines, Mary Elizabeth Gaines, Olive Estelle Farrar, Chris Farrar and Jeremi Farrar; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Pallbearers will be Billy Walden, Tom Centorbi, Mike Brock, Bubba Locke, Kerry Gibson, Parker Ward, Wayne Methvien and Bob Burton.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and care-givers at Willis-Knighton (LA), Harris Methodist Alliance (TX), Life Hospital (LA), and Harrison Skilled Facility (TX) that brightened dads spirits and worked feverishly to keep him comfortable during his long battle with illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Midway Church of Christ (Shreveport, LA).
