Obituary: Helene Marie Strange Frey passed away on Aug 6, 2016 at the age of 87. Helene was born in Banks, Arkansas and graduated from Banks H.S. in 1945, where she enjoyed playing basketball. She worked at Potlatch Logging Co and Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church in Hoover, AL for 45 years, and cherished her ladies school class friends. She loved God and her family. Helene was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Sidney Shields Frey; her beloved granddaughter, Hannah Frey; 3 brothers, J.E. Strange, Ray Strange, and Paul Strange; sister, Mary (Fred) Hollis. Survivors include two sons, Shields (Page) Frey and James (Mary) Frey of Vestavia Hills; daughters, Marie (Mehrdad) Farahani of Oklahoma and Susan Frey of Vestavia Hills; grandchildren, Taylor, Helen, Andrew, and Ben Frey; Nicholas and Julian Lombardo; Melody, and Clay (Bethany) Farahani; one great granddaughter, Kathryn Frey; a sister-in-law Shirley Strange; a niece, Sandra (Doug) Ashcraft. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. on , 10, 2016 at Ridout's Southern Heritage in Pelham, AL, with the service starting at 11 a.m. in the funeral home's chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Green Valley Baptist Church. |

Obituary: Richard Dean Frennea passed away on 5, 2016, after turning 82 the day before from complications after a heart attack. He would want to be remembered for his devout love of his wife of 61 years, his fun-loving family, many friends, the Catholic Church, and the love for the game of golf and Alabama football. He is predeceased by his parents, Earl and Joyce Frennea, and his wifes parents, Raymond and Adella Ponto and Ponto family siblings Donald Ponto and James Ponto. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Ponto Frennea; his six children and their spouses, Richard and Lynn Frennea, Brian and Ulda Frennea, Dennis Frennea, Robert and Tracy Frennea, Pamela Frennea Ewert, and Thomas Frennea; his 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa Frennea, Rebecca Frennea, Brian Frennea II, Brooke and JJ Helton, Kirby Frennea, Cody Frennea, Carly Frennea and Lee David Willeford, Kyle and Rachel Frennea, Cameron Blalack, Meghan and Trey Mann, and Taylor Frennea; his great grandchildren, Callie Meadows, Logan Helton, and Olivia Helton; his aunts and uncles Marylou and Jim Warren, and Deloris Skalisky; his extended Ponto family Mary and Dennis Fuller, Barbara Thompson, Carol Ponto, David Ponto, Michael Ponto, Bette Christiansen, Donna Smith and Rose Roell. A native of Minnesota, Richard was born an only child in Owatonna, Minn., on Nov. 4, 1934. He met his childhood sweetheart, Joanne Ponto, while working as a pin-setter at the bowling alley owned by his parents in Faribault. would marry six years later on 25, 1955. As an only child, he loved becoming part of the large, fun-loving Ponto family, which welcomed him as one of their own. graduating from Bethlehem Academy High School in 1952, he attended Minneapolis Business . Once married, the couple moved to Duluth, Minn., where Richard started his career in data processing for US Steel and Duluth Avionics, a division of Litton Industries. In the summer of 1967, the Frennea family moved to Mobile, Ala., for Richard to advance his career with Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Litton Industries. He retired from Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1999. As products of parochial school, he and his wife would send their children to Catholic elementary schools in Duluth and in Mobile, where they have been members of St. Dominic Catholic Church for forty-nine years. He was active in the church, serving as an usher, a Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the Jubilee Club, the parish's senior group, where he served as president for five years. He also served on the parish council. A golfer from early adulthood, he introduced his children, and later some of his grandchildren, to the game as way of providing a lifelong activity they could all share together. From family gatherings and annual outings to trips to major events, the last being the 2016 Ryder Cup in the family's home state of Minnesota, golf was one way he remained connected to his children and grandchildren during their adult years. He regularly volunteered at the LPGA tournaments in Mobile, striking up a friendship with major champion and No. 1 ranked Lorena Ochoa. He actively supported St. Dominics Monseigneur Murphy Open Fore the Kids annual fundraiser for the athletic program. He played often in retirement, including weekly golf groups at Spring Hill Golf Course and Southern Senior Golf Association. In his later years, he regularly shot his age or better. In memory of Richard Frennea, the family asks that donations be made to the Tuscaloosa chapter of The First Tee program or a charity of your choice. The First Tee provides youth with educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Donations can be made to First Tee Tuscaloosa, PARA Foundation, P.O. Box 2496, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403 or through their website, tcpara.org by selecting the First Tee Tuscaloosa fund. The viewing and visitation as well as the funeral service will be held 10, 2016, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 4160 Burma Road, Mobile, Ala. Mass will be held at 11 a.m. with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. A reception will be held in the Murphy following the service.
