Obituary: Robert L. Esten died peacefully , 11, 2010, surrounded by his family at the UW-Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Bob was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1946 to Margaret (Logeman) and Phillip A. Esten. Bob graduated from Wayland Academy in 1964 and Stanford University in 1968. He married Linda Spaans on 16, 1978, in Sonoma, California. A product of this union was their son, Jordan who was born in 1984. Although their time together was cut short, Bob was an incredible father and mentor to Jordan. graduating from Stanford, Bob spent 29 years in the paper industry with Thilmany Pulp and Paper, Akrosil, and the Fox River Paper where, in particular, he became president and chief operating officer. Bob left the paper industry, he worked as a senior partner with Phoenix Consulting Associates. He became president of Wayland Academy on 1, 2002, after leaving his role as the Academy\s Chair of the Board of Trustees. His credentials made him uniquely qualified to handle the business side of the presidency, while his heartfelt love for the school drove his desire for excellence on campus. He led Wayland through one of the school\s most exciting decades, as he oversaw the Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2005, which attracted nearly 1,000 alums from around the world. He put together an exceptional administrative team that offered the Academy long-term stability, and he recruited outstanding faculty while initiating the Wayland writing program. Under his leadership, the school increased its student population by 57% (from 153 to 240 students), and Wayland\s endowment tripled. Lastly, he successfully administered the refurbishment of Wayland\s 1855 icon building, Wayland Hall, and he helped raise millions for its cost. Wayland Hall was re-dedicated on 17, 2009, during the Alumni Reunion Weekend. The Esten family\s devotion to Wayland Academy goes back over 100 years. Bob\s Grandfather, O. D. Esten, served the school as a teacher, coach, and Dean of Boys from 1902-1912. Bob\s father, Phillip, graduated from Wayland in 1929 and received the Academy\s Distinguished Service Citation in 1984. Bob also had two siblings who graduated from Wayland and, in 2002, his son, Jordan, graduated from the Academy. Although he had already made his decision to retire earlier this year for personal reasons, Bob\s sudden death came as a surprise to all. Legacy, alum, trustee, and parent, Esten experienced Wayland in a way no other head of the school ever had. Bob had a passion for learning, and his advice to Wayland students was simply, do the work. He was the ultimate grammarian, which he initially learned from his English teacher at Wayland, Miss Swan. He also had a great interest in new technology, as he purchased his first Apple computer in the early 1980\s and his last in 2010. Bob had a great interest in fine wine, gourmet food, and traveling the world with his friends and family, whom he loved dearly. Bob was an avid sports fan and especially had a great love and respect for the game of golf and its customs and traditions. He grew up as a member of Old Hickory Country Club in Beaver Dam where he made his first hole-in-one at the age of 12 years and was Club Champion in 1968. Bob was also a long time member of North Shore Golf Club in Menasha, where he served as a Board Member and President of the Club. He especially loved playing golf with his son Jordan; he had looked forward to more of this in his retirement years. Bob served as Chairman of the Board of the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, was also a Director of Horicon Bank. Survivors include his wife, Linda S. Esten of Menasha; his son, Jordan Esten of Hanover, NH; his sisters and brother, Mary Margaret Wohlwend (friend, Jim Butterbrodt) of Beaver Dam, Elizabeth Esten Cross of Northbrook, IL, and Phillip (Mary LaPlant) Esten of LaCrosse; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am, on , 16, 2010, in Kimberly Chapel located on the Wayland Campus. The Esten family will greet guests in the chapel starting at 10:00 am. Following the service, a lunch will be served in Pickard Dining Hall.
