Obituary: Ralph Gordon Echols died on , 18th at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Ann Rowe Echols. Born 12, 1929, in Bluefield, West Virginia, Mr. Echols was the son of Ralph and Rowena Carper Echols. He received his Bachelors and Master of Architecture degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and edited the school yearbook. Later he received a Masters of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where he studied under Josep Luis Serte, and then a Master of City Planning from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. graduating from Virginia Tech, he served in the U.S. Air Force where he rose to the rank of Captain. While in the Air Force, he did planning and architecture work and later did early civil defense planning for the Department of Defense. graduating from Harvard, he worked with Walter Gropius at Architects Collaborative. As he finished his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, he participated in the excavation of and recording of inscriptions at the Temple of Inscriptions (Temple Seven), at Tikal, Guatemala. He started his teaching career at Virginia Tech where he taught Architecture and Urban Planning. He later became Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at Miami University in Ohio, and Professor and Dean of the of Architecture and Environmental Design at Texas A&M University. While at Texas A&M University he founded the for Historic Resources. He retired from Texas A&M University in 1998. He was widely published. Among his books was the book Early Texas Architecture, for which he received an award from the San Antonio Preservation Association. Mr. Echols lived in Lynchburg, Va. since his retirement. While in Lynchburg, he served as a Planning Commissioner, and as a board member of the Lynchburg Historical Foundation, the Southern Memorial Association, and the Valley Conservation Council. His wife of 33 years, Agnes Patton Echols, and his daughter Annette Lee Palmer preceded Mr. Echols in death. He is survived by: his wife Ann Rowe Echols, son Ralph James Echols and his wife, Elaine, son Gordon Alexander Echols and wife Chriss Pryately, son Stuart Echols and wife Anne, son-in-law Thomas Palmer, and four grandchildren John, Pete, Emily, and Karina Echols. A mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on , 21, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church by Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush. Burial will be at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine, Va. Visitation will be held today, , 20, 2014, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the home of Sally and Bob Leslie, 3844 Peakland Place, Lynchburg, Va. |

Obituary: Patricia Sue Dutko Echols, 60, passed away peacefully on 14, 2014. Patricia was born in Salem, Ohio and resided in Virginia Beach since 1979. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Dorothy Dutko; father-in-law Charles and sisters-in-law Elizabeth Holm and Patty Echols. Patricia was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church since 1979 and was a breast cancer survivor since 1995. She enjoyed camping, canoeing, yoga and NASCAR and earned an Associate Degree in Graphic Art. She enjoyed working with children in Virginia Beach City Schools, School Program as well as taking care of her nieces and nephews. She was a strong, loving and caring person who never missed a family birthday and could always make you laugh and smile. Survivors include her loving husband of eighteen years Charlie Echols, her brothers and sisters Dorie Dutko, Tom Dutko, Carrie McElrath (Del), Joan Hilton (James), Rich Dutko (Trish) Jeane Dutko (Larry) and Jack Dutko (Lisa) and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Patricias Life will be held on , 17, 2014, 12:00 Noon at Star of the Sea Catholic Church by The Rev. Esteban DeLeon. Following services the family will receive friends on evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Williams , Kempsville Chapel. Obituary: Mildred Echols was born to Minnie T. and Morfeit "Boss" Bishop on 3/23/1935 in Dinwiddie VA. She met and married the love of her life, Roy F. Echols on 2/22/1956. moved to Mechanicsville VA., where her son Roy F. Echols Jr. was born on 1/15/1960.. She is survived by her son and a grandson Roy F. Echols III (Trey), a brother in law Lea Boisseau and sister in laws Nell Bishop and Emogene Echols.She is predeceased by her husband Roy and her sisters Alma B. Story, Gladys B. Watson, Marian B. Boisseau and her brothers Kenneth A. Bishop, William (Bobby) Bishop, and MA Bishop Jr. a great niece Sindy M. Cox, a nephew Charles Skooky Bacon and brother in laws Bobby Johnson and Ross Echols. Surviving great nieces and nephews are Joyce B. Story, Jimmy Story, Johnny Story, Jackie B. Cox, Margaret B. Kondash, Frances B. Daniel Allan Bishop, Vivian B. McClain, Susan B. Goodwin, Brenda B. Mayton, Scott Bishop, Ernie Bishop, Patricia B. Goodwin, Robbie Bishop, and Scott Bishop. Mildred retired from Anthem Blue Cross after many years of service. She became quite a poet in her later years while living at Spring Arbor Assisted Living. We would like to thank Spring Arbor and Lexington Court Rehab for all of the care and love shared with our loved one. The family will receive friends at the Atlee Chapel of the Woody , 9271 Shady Grove Rd, Mechanicsville VA , 16 from 12:00- 2:00 PM and where funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM.
