Obituary: Anna Louise Nelson Engelhardt died on 30, 2014, in Corpus Christi, TX, her home for almost 70 years.  Anna was born Dec. 14, 1923, in Taylor, TX, the daughter of George and Agnes Nelson. She was of Swedish descent; her grandparents, and Clara Louise Lundberg, came to the United States from Sweden. She grew up and graduated high school in Taylor. The following life story was found in her personal belongings and says it best. These are Annas words:

I left Taylor, Texas in 1941, with enough money from my parents to enroll in Durham Business in Austin. graduating from Durham, I got a job in the
Rural War Education Department. I lived with four other young women in a carefree existence, living hand-to-mouth, moving from one apartment to the next, laughing all the way - nothing was more important to us than sunbathing, knowing by heart the bus runs, and polishing our toe-nails. Little did we know that a war was going on! This is about the time I met my husband, Morris Engelhardt, a returning Air Force Captain and pilot of B-24 bombers. We danced the night away, without a care in the world. The war was over and life just beginning. We married in Taylor and moved to Corpus Christi in 1945. Being in Corpus Christi was not easy for me at first because of the climate and not knowing a soul - it was like moving to the end of the world! I had my first child, Susan, in 1946, and my second, Molly, four years later. We faced life with a small budget and Mo trying to start a business selling insurance from scratch. We kept up with my Taylor roots and my mother and father until their deaths in 1974. We joined the First United Methodist Church and made some of our most valuable and long-standing friends. As the children got older, I got involved in community service that started with my invitation to join the Junior League. This was an unexpected honor to me. It opened my eyes to the hundreds of volunteer organizations and agencies that work behind the scenes to make a city viable. My favorite experience in the early years of volunteer service was working with puppetry through the Junior League. We performed in elementary schools for children who had never seen live performances before. It was so nice that so many people took me in and made me their friend, despite the fact that I wasn a native Corpus Christian. While we supported our daughters in their educational pursuits, I had my own desires to further my knowledge in the arts and interior design. I attended Del Mar in Corpus Christi, Texas A&M in Kingsville, and completed a correspondence course from the New York School of Interior Design. For several years, I worked part time as an interior designer.

Meanwhile, I continued to be involved in the community by serving on the Board of Trustees of the Art Museum of South Texas, the Heritage Society, the Food Bank of Corpus Christi, and Las Doñas de la Corte, the pageantry component of Corpuss annual Buccaneer Days Festival.
Of late, I have become very involved in my church. I oversaw the renovation of our chapel parlor and the brides room and have joined the Adult Ministries Program. I participated in the Walk to Emmaus six months ago, which was both spiritual and inspirational.

My life has been filled with joys, experiences, and great rewards for which I am grateful. I continue to have fond memories of my beginnings in Taylor, Texas. -Anna 2001

Anna loved her family and her friends. Her giving nature had a broad reach, helping both friends and strangers in time of need. She was a beautiful homemaker and her expertise in the kitchen, cooking and entertaining, was world class. In her work with the Heritage Society and particularly the Centennial House, Anna grew a passion for the history of Corpus Christi. Anna was involved in organizing both the first Christmas Tree Forest at the old museum in South Bluff Park and the first Christmas Tree Forest in the new Philip Johnson museum. Anna was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Morris Engelhardt, and her two siblings, Eileen Thompson and George Nelson. She is survived by two daughters and their spouses: Susan (Mike) Ritchey of Gunnison, Colorado; Molly (Gary Goodwin) Engelhardt of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren Mavis Stewart (Chuck) of Dallas, Marianna Ritchey (Andrew) of Northampton, MA, Judd Webb (Annalee) of Tulsa, Buck Ritchey of Los Angeles, and Meryl Goodwin of Los Angeles; and three great-granddaughters, Aiden Mae and Harper Anna Stewart of Dallas and Lilah Rose Webb of Tulsa; and nieces and nephews Ann (Bill) Peace of Austin, Julie (Ronny) Clark of Houston, Jon (Diana) Nelson of Austin and Terri (Jerry) Abert of Godfry, IL. Services will be held Dec. 6, 2014, 2 p.m., in the chapel of First United Methodist Church on Shoreline.
