My name is Will Porter. Our honoree today, Juanita Edwards, had four sons and one daughter. I married the daughter, Joan, so Mrs Edwards was my mother-in-law. But if you don mind, I will refer to her today the way I have referred to her for the last thirty years, as Grandmother. I can compete with the things my wife and her brothers said last night. I just want to add three short rambles of my own about Grandmother. Ramble Number 1 In the 1990s, we had a Scottish Terrier named Henry. Henry and Grandmother didn have a lot in common. For one thing, Henry was a Scottish Terrier and Grandmother was a bulldog. And unlike Grandmother, Henry didn live to extreme old age; he died of cancer when he was just seven. But Henry and Grandmother did have something in common and it was something really important. Scotties are known as one-family dogs, that is, they are fiercely loyal to the small circle of their owners - their family - and suspicious of, even downright hostile to, pretty much everybody else. Thats the way Henry was. And thats the way Grandmother was, too, for much of her life. She was definitely a one-family woman, devoted to her five children and suspicious of, occasionally even hostile to, everybody else. For example, from Grandmothers perspective, for the first ten or fifteen years of my marriage to her daughter, through the births of our first two children, I was more or less on probation. Of course, when I was young, I didn appreciate her skepticism about me. But as I grew older, I also grew up, at least a little. For one thing, for the last several years Ive found myself vetting my daughter Marys boyfriend. I was skeptical of him at first, but hes grown wonderfully on me, and when he asked me recently for permission to marry my daughter, well, I realized what a fine young man he really is. Maybe that was my mistake. Maybe I should have gone to Grandmother and asked for her daughters hand in marriage.... Okay, maybe not. Anyway, as I learned that life isn the cake walk it seemed to me in my teens and twenties, I grew to respect Grandmother, and then to love her. I realized that she had not stifled her children, on the contrary, they all turned out to be terrific people, independent, strong, loving, and of course, strongly devoted to their own families. My wife is the most wonderful woman in the world, and my brothers in law - the only brothers Ive ever had - are four of the finest men Ive ever known. I could carry this on to the next two generations but you get the point. This beautiful family is Grandmothers achievement. I should add that I eventually got off probation. I knew Id really arrived a few years ago, when Grandmother would phone us and Id answer, and instead of insisting on talking to Joan, shed be willing to talk to me. Ramble Number 2 I went to fourth and fifth grade at St Hugo of the Hills Catholic School up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and while I was there, I remember learning from the sisters that St Joseph is the patron of a good death. What a lousy assignment for St Joseph, I thought! Whos going to pray to him? Who wants to pray for a death of any kind? Of course, at that time I myself was planning to live forever. It looked for a while like Grandmother had a similar plan. Until just a couple of weeks ago, I would have been willing to wager that she was going to make it to 100. Every now and then God seemed to play at killing her, the way a cat might play with an insect, but until recently I guess His heart wasn really in it. What was a death stroke for another person, was a minor set-back for Grandmother. A car crash killed my grandfather Porter, but that approach didn work with Grandmother Edwards. Shortly after we moved back to Dallas to be closer to her, she survived a head-on collision with a truck. (Thank God the driver of the truck was unharmed as well.) She was 89 at the time. That was when she stopped driving. A fall down the stairs killed my other grandfather, but that didn work for Grandmother either. A year or two continued... |

Obituary: Joseph A. Edwards, loving husband, father and friend, passed away Dec. 5, 2014 at the age of 85. An avid music lover and clarinet player, Joe, upon being drafted into the United States Army, helped to form the first Military Police ing Band in the United States in 1951. Despite his many awards, he always felt this was one of his highest honors. He also went on to form an army concert band, dance band and combo band. He was the Band Master for the aforementioned, all while blowing a mean clarinet himself. In addition to raising a family, he also was very active in the church and bringing music to the community, helping form and becoming Keen Teen Youth Director in 1960 at the Bellaire Gym. As a DJ and with DJ's from local KNUZ, it served as the perfect venue for teens to gather for great music and dancing. In the church, his involvement grew from serving first locally as President of the church men's group to ultimately becoming the President of all of the United Presbyterian Men in the United States. In the private sector, Joe quickly became an expert in building codes and construction. Prior and after becoming the longtime Building Official for the City of Bellaire, he received various awards/titles from 1965 to 2005, including winning the Progressive Architecture Design Award for Residential Planning, Director: Greater Houston Builders Association, Chairman: ICBO Evaluation Committee, Building Official of the Year, President: Building Officials Association of Texas, President: Gulf Coast Association of Texas Building Officials and President: Foundation Performance Committee. He also served as President of the Board of the South Padre Timeshare for many years. Just to fill up any spare time Joe had left, and although he attended the University of Texas, he transcended university lines and taught Building Codes and Construction for 15 years for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. Joe 'retired' from Bellaire in 1995 only to take on another challenge head on and form his own consulting company specializing in building codes, construction and inspections for various cities in the Houston area- 'officially' retiring in 2012. Joe spent his twilight hours enjoying his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and of course, taking cruises around the world with the love of his life Danna right by his side. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Gladys Edwards; stepmother, Ora Lee Edwards; daughter, Julie Hoover. He is survived by his wife Danna Edwards and first wife Beth Edwards; daughters, Marla and Mark Deibert, Tanya Edwards; stepsons, Buzzy and Michelle Campbell, Chuck and Debbie Campbell; grandchildren, Robert and Mary Hoover, Justin and Alyssa Deibert, Lance Deibert and Laura, Lauren Deibert, Kristen and Mark Herzik, Kimberly Murray and fiancé Chase, Kayla Murray and Rob, Blaine Campbell, Joshua and Christie Campbell, Will Campbell, Kyle Campbell, Kate Campbell; 3 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Wed., Dec. 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Brenham, TX and on Thurs., Dec. 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Earthman Bellaire in Bellaire, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 408 N. Baylor St. Brenham, TX 77833 or a charity of your choice. |
