Obituary: Joe Eakin, a fifth-generation Texan, was born 5, 1940 in Kilgore, TX to Joe Edward Eakin and Dorothy Elmore. He passed away on , 2, 2015 due to cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, LuAnn, his brother’s and sister’s in law, Dan and Cindy Eakin, Gene and Lyn Eakin, uncle, Tommy Eakin, nieces, Shelby Yllana and Arfeo, Terri Miller and Jim, nephews, Scott Layne and Vicki, Steven Eakin, Greg Hunt and great nieces and nephews Brittany Layne, Scotty Layne, Matthew Parlington, Shannon Miller, and Xavier Yllana. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lana Bess Eakin, and nephews Derrick Eakin and David Eakin. He was a bright, shining light. His smile was always there and he lit up a room. Although he was not tall, his demeanor was such that he was larger than life. He never met a stranger and was known for telling rapid-fire jokes. If there was a captive audience, he was in his element. Joe’s family moved around Southeast Texas a lot during his early years. As a result of this he experienced many new surroundings that shaped his early life. He never met a stranger and was comfortable around adults as well as young people. He once talked a crop duster pilot into letting him fly with him on some passes over some farmland. When Joe’s Mother came looking for him and saw him zooming overhead, she nearly lost it. He was always pushing the envelope. He was a gifted athlete at Saratoga High School, lettering in all four sports. He loved his four years in the U. S. Navy. He had so many experiences there that most could only dream about. He was very proud of being the Drill Master for the Flying Rifles Drill Team. This team went to various locations to perform their close order drills for state fairs, business openings, or military events. Then he was assigned to Iceland which seemed to be a death sentence. However, he LOVED IT. He was the 1st Radio Operator on the NATO Admiral’s plane. flew to so many locations including Australia and all of Europe. He truly loved seeing the entire world. the Navy, the business world called. He eventually went to work for Southwestern Bell. That is where he met LuAnn in 1965. were married on 15, 1967. On 17, 1971 he and LuAnn were driving to a Christmas party when a car in front of them suddenly drove into Lake Cliff. He jumped in the water and swam out to the sinking car. A baseball bat was found and he swam back out to the car and broke in the back window. Inside was an elderly, Black preacher, Rev. Robinson. Joe pulled him out of the back of the car and swam/pushed him back to shore. For this heroic act, AT&T awarded Joe the Theodore N. Vail award for Noteworthy Service. At the end of his career with AT&T, he had the SCO in Dallas and provided one-stop customer service to several major customers. One of his employees said, “Joe taught me how to provide customer service.” In 1989 he took a retirement offer and never looked back. He decided to reinvent himself so he started working for a golf shop. He wanted to learn all phases of the golf business. this work experience, he went to work for a deer feeder company. The goal was to increase revenue. He met that goal the first year. He then worked for a succession of sporting good stores. He said each store he worked for went into Chapter 11! Finally, he went to work for Bass Pro. He loved guns and optics. He had a following of customers that would wait to talk with just him during sale days. He read voraciously and became an SME on all types of guns and optics. He was so knowledgeable on all phases of gun use. He loved hunting and collecting guns and knives. He was so willing to share his extensive knowledge about guns and knives with anyone. He loved his family and was proud of his East Texas heritage. Many thanks to his longtime caregiver, Virginia Morales, for her care. Also, thanks to Dr. William S. Howard for taking care of Joe for over 20 years. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter or animal rights organization.

Obituary: Born as Emma Frances in San Antonio, Texas on 27th, 1923, she was the youngest of three children. She moved to Houston as a youngster when her mother Hazel remarried to Herbert L. Flake, who promptly dubbed her Annie after the cartoon waif, because of her curly red hair. The nickname stuck, and everyone knew her as Annie from then on.
Annie graduated from Milby High School and attended the University of Houston, studying accounting at the start of WWII. Her middle sibling, Elmer "Buddy" Speelman, was killed while bombing the Ploesti oil fields with the 459th Bomber Group on May 6th, 1944.
At the end of WWII, she married a handsome returning Navy sailor, also a Milby graduate, Thomas Paul Peschka. worked for many years at the family business with her sister Marie and husband Red Lawyer, and nephews and niece Bill and Jeanette McWhorter, George McWhorter, Clyde Mahavier, grandniece Cindy McWhorter and son Thomas Lee. lived in the Westbury subdivision for 24 years. Tom P. passed away in 1986.
She later married her beloved Sidney William Eakin, Jr. have been enjoying retirement together for 23 years in Galveston and near the golf course in Country Place, south of Houston, where she will be greatly missed. She loved Galveston, spending many weekends at the Flake home on Ave. M and later most of the summer months at the Blue House at Terramar Beach, next door to great friends Lloyd and Cookie Pepper. Surrounded by friends and relatives, Annie would play her ukulele while leading the singing on the back porch, when there was not a midnight floundering trip planned. Sid is a Navy vet and dedicated saltwater fisherman.
Sid, her son Tom L. and his wife Karen Kraemer Peschka want to give special thanks to Sids sister Marlene and husband Carl Mitchell and their daughter Nancy Mollard for their help over the years, and to Arnie for inspiration with the computer.
Annie passed away after a short illness morning, 11th, 2010. She was with us 86 years. A memorial will be held in the Chapel of the Angels on 21st at noon. Please remember her always, whether you can be with us or not. She was loved.
