Obituary: Helen Baugh Evans was born to Verna and Lawrence K. Baugh on 29, 1924 in Logan, Utah and passed away peacefully at home on 25, 2016 in Merced, California at the age of 91 years. Helen graduated from Logan High School and attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She also attended McCune School of Music in Salt Lake City, Utah. Helen married Stratford Evans in 1944, and they moved to San Francisco, California, so Stratford could obtain his certificate in Mortuary Science. The couple lived in Utah and Southern California before they saw an opportunity to buy Merceds oldest funeral home in 1957. Strat and Helen owned and operated Stratford Evans Merced Chapel from 1957 until their retirement in 1992. She held a round-the-clock job that introduced her to just about everyone in Merced. Helen attributed their growing business to the care she and her husband took in comforting grieving families. The trying situations also earned the couple friends all over town. When someone loses their parent, mate, or their child, this is the worst thing that can ever happen to them, and if you can help them, youve made a friend. her retirement, Mrs. Evans stayed very active in the funeral home. At the young age of five, Helen started piano lessons and at the age of eight decided to learn to play the violin. In the 9th grade, Helen began playing the violin in the Utah State University Symphony Orchestra and she also served at the drum major at her high school. At the age of 18, Helen began to work for the Union Pacific Rail Road Ticket Office in Logan, Utah. In San Francisco, Helen worked for a diamond wholesale dealer where they imported diamonds from Belgium and Africa. When Helen first arrived to Merced she worked at Farmers Insurance Group, where she was employed for three years before deciding to work full-time at the funeral home and part-time as the Welcome Newcomer Hostess. Helen loved being involved in the community of Merced and joined almost every community group. She was a member and past President of Merced Soroptimist International Club, the Emblem Club, the American Legion Auxiliary #83, Woodbine Club, Farmers/Toastmistress Club, Merced Womens Club. She was a member of Merced Republican Womens Club, serving in offices at the Local, District, State, and National level, Merced Historical Society, AARP #282, where she served as the Director from 1992-2000 and Tour Travel Chairman from 2000-2004, Friends of the Library, Hospital Assistance League, Grey Lady at Mercy Hospital, Daughter of the Castle Air Museum, Captain of the Nine-Tee-Niners Merced Golf and Country Club, Pythian Sisters, and Past Noble Grand of Ophir Rebekah Lodge #25, and California Women for Agriculture. She also served on the following boards, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Hospice of Merced, Mercy Hospital Foundation, Fine Arts at Merced and Stanislaus State University, Valley sponsor for Town Hall, Inc. in Fresno, CA, Merced Symphony Board, Human Relations Commission for the City of Merced, Merced Red Cross, Goldman Committee, and the Merced City Schools advisory committee. She was also on the Consumer Affairs Committee for the California Directors Association, and attended the National Foundation of Service School of Management and two sessions for Ladies in Service, and The Dodge Institute for Advanced Mortuary Studies for six sessions. Helen loved to play golf, and travel world-wide. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed needlepoint and knitting. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Stratford Evans; son, Lawrence Evans; and son-in-law, Rodney C. Freer. She is survived by her daughter, Geraldine E. Freer and grandson, Spencer J. Freer both of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Clyde F. Baugh of Concord, CA; niece, Shellie Jensen and husband, Dr. Ronald Jensen of Modesto, CA; and nephew, Clyde F. Baugh Jr. and wife Janet Baugh of Santee, CA; and the extended family of Shellie and Rick. A visitation will be held , 7, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with funeral services being held on , 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Stratford Evans Merced , 1490 B Street Merced, CA. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in Merced. Remembrances may be made in Helen's name to your favorite community organization. |
