Obituary: Alfred (Gramps) Eggen was born on 17, 1913, in Fargo, North Dakota. He walked this earth for over 100 years living his Faith daily with a joyous heart and a lively spirit. It would take hours to fully tell his story. Simply, he was spiritually he salt of the earth, and for his family and friends he was just one amazing human being to have loved and known. Alfred was the youngest of three children born to Johan and Signe Eggen who had immigrated to America from Norway. The death of his mother and then of his father came unexpectedly. Events like being an orphan at such a young age, and then a World War II Prisoner of War were just that. were life events and nothing more. Alfred was one to live every day in-the-moment. He felt fortunate that he was able to remember his mother and father, and all the lessons learned and mischief forgiven. He lived with his sister, Evelyn, and brother, Leonard, at the Lake Park-Wild Rice Childrens in Minnesota. When his sister left the Childrens to be married and his brother left to become a Merchant Marine, Al went to live with a teacher and her family in Rothsay, Minnesota. That was May 1929. He then proudly graduated from Pelican Rapids High School. graduation Alfred left Minnesota for California to join his brother and also become a Merchant Marine. It was in 1941 while aboard the President Harrison that Alfred was taken Prisoner of War and detained at the Pootung Civil Assembly in Shanghai, China, for four years. Though he didn talk much about it, we know that his survival emotionally and physically was remarkable. As much as one can prepare for war, he had prepared himself for his loss of freedom. He kept his mind active and learned naval architecture from a fellow prisoner. He mapped the constellations, and he was always grateful that he was not as mistreated as he could have been. He had to take each day, one day at a time, finding as much goodness in that day as was possible. the war ended and he was able to come home in 1945, Alfred returned to San Francisco, where he met and married Mary Bagdasarian. Just after their marriage he went to work for the City of San Francisco Municipal Railway as a Cable Splicer. You couldn help but notice this blond, blue-eyed Norwegian in his wifes Armenian-speaking family and circle of friends, but Al blended in seamlessly. He picked up enough Armenian words to get by, and his pinochle skills made him Uncle Larry Bakers favorite partner. Alfred shared most of his summers rolling raisin trays at the Bagdasarian family home and vineyard in Selma, California. Alfred was an avid reader. His Minnesota family has kept the books he gave them as gifts all these years. His niece, Ardis, still has the copies of Robin Hood and Heidi he had given her. Alfred read everything from the works of Shakespeare to the daily newspaper. Alfreds favorite book: the Bible. Alfred shared his love of sports with his daughters, Elaine Zahigian and Helen Jenkins. Dodgers/Giants games were always exciting in the Eggen household because Mary loved the Dodgers and Al loved the Giants. For the little Eggen girls those games were kind of a win-win. Als favorite football team: the San Francisco 49ers, and when watching football with Elaine and her family, the Pittsburg Steelers. He was the ideal dad. He made pancakes every morning, walked his daughters to grammar school, helped with school projects, and said The Lords Prayer with Elaine and Helen every night before they went to sleep. As they grew up he was fun to shop with, sit on the swing with, or vacation with. Dad shared all these good times with his son-in-laws Richard Zahigian and David Jenkins as well. Al loved a ride in Richards car or Davids truck. Gramps was the original active, contributing-every-day grandparent. He always had time for a conversation with his grandchildren. He had time for their soccer games and piano recitals. He was able to see each of their graduations from high school and college. He attended the wedding celebrations of Michael to Suzanne Drake, Steven to Natalie Bagby, and Jennifer to Joshua Ganzhorn. Gramps shared his life experiences and adventures with his grandchildren, and there was a myriad of wise tales and his example of partaking in the silly side of life. Gramps made summer days just the best. Everyone enjoyed his swimming pool and endless supply of popsicles. That first time you stood at the edge of the pool gathering the courage to jump in, Gramps would put his hands out and you knew he would always catch you. He was a patient teacher, like his mother, Signe. Michael learned how to play chess and backgammon from his grandfather. Steven learned that his love for music came from his fiddle playing great grandfather, Johan. And Gramps shared his cameras and all he knew about photography with Jennifer. It wouldn have been a summer vacation without an exhausting trailblazing hike, or trip to Gramps favorite photo spot: Yosemite. The adoring joys of Gramps life were his great grandchildren: Allison Zahigian, Savanah Drake, David and Richard Zahigian, Luke and Brynn Zahigian, and twins Jonah and Henry Ganzhorn. The first time that he held the baby boys, Jonah and Henry, we all laughed as they snapped his signature suspenders. Gramps smiled too, of course. Videos and photographs will be shown for a long time so his presence and love can mentor this generation as well. Alfred called his sister Evelyns family our Minnesota family. He enjoyed all the visits, phone calls, letters, photographs, and cards. The road trips to Minnesota were among his most treasured memories. It was extra special when his niece, Ardis, and her daughter, Brenda, visited Al just before his 100th birthday. On Marys Bagdasarian family side, Alfred and daughters kept in touch with great nephew Mark continued... |
