Obituary: William Lester Evans, 77, of Edmond, OK, where he lived with his daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law Larry Roper until he was reunited with his wife Arletta, his son John Ellis, and other friends and family on 31, 2015, to spend eternity with our Lord. He was born William Lester Evans on 19, 193 in Boggy Depot, OK to G.W. & Myrtle (Overstreet) Evans. Bill was G.W.s first-born and Myrtles third-born of 9 boys and 3 girls. Bill moved from Boggy Depot to Caddo, OK in 1943, when G.W. joined the Army to serve and protect his country in WWII. In 1945, the family moved to Purcell, OK when his dad returned home from injuries sustained in the war. Bill attended Fairview school in Purcell, where he was a member of the baseball and track teams. Bill completed the 8th grade, before quitting school to work and help out the family. In 1953, at the age of 17, Bill too, wanted to serve and protect his country, so he joined the Navy. Little did he know the service he would provide would be Great chow. Bill became the cook for his commanding officer, Colonel C.J. Smity, USN in Emporium Beach, CA. Bill and his crew of cooks won Navys Number One Chow in the Country award two years in a row. Bill finally told his commanding officer he had joined the Navy to see the world. Reluctantly, Colonel Smity released Bill to the Li-men K Swenson 729 Destroyer. Although he was still the Best cook in the Navy, he did finally get to see more than 16 countries during the rest of his tour. Upon returning home, he met and married the love of his life, Arletta McCoy, daughter of Ellis McCoy and Alta (Severs) McCoy, on May 23, 1959. He started his new life as a husband to Arletta and father to her 3-year-old daughter, Lisa, whom he loved as his own and later would adopt. On 11, 1959, he started work at Fred Jones Mfg. at a whopping $1.35 per hour. Over the next 39 years, he was promoted from the armature department to lead man, and finally second floor manager, where he remained until he retired in 1989. During his years at Fred Jones, he enjoyed 15 years on the Fred Jones Falcons softball team, and two years as team manager. He played golf and bowled as well. On 16, 1960, Bill was blessed with a son, John Ellis, who became his best friend in years to come. As his children grew, Bill thought about what he wanted to do later in life. In 1971, Bill returned to school at U.S. Grant in the evenings and earned his GED. Lisa thought it was really cool that her dad was going to night school at the same school she went to during the day. Finally graduating from high school meant the world to him. It was a great accomplishment. In 1980, bill bought the McCoy homestead in Paden, OK from his father-in-law, where Bill and John started the next chapter in their lives. built their herd to 45 cows and 2 bulls. The bailed hay, worked the farm, hunted, fished and golfed together, until Johns untimely death on 21, 2004. Several years later, Bill sold the farm to McCoy family members; because he promised it would stay in their family. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, G.W. and Myrtle Evans; his wife, Arletta; son, John; and six brothers. He is survived by daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law Larry Roper of Edmond, OK; granddaughter, Shanna Roper and grandson, John Evans Jr, both of Oklahoma City; two brothers; three sisters; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Whether you called him William, Bill, Billy, Daddy, Grandpa, or Friend, his contagious laugh and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Bills casket is closed for the ceremony at his insistence. Don want people parading around looking at me when Im dead |
