Obituary: John Henry Epley, Jr., 63, of Hickory, passed away on , 19, 2016 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical , following a period of declining health. John was born on May 20, 1952 in McDowell to Lucy Evans Epley and the late John Henry Epley, Sr. He was employed as a machinist in furniture manufacturing. Surviving in addition to his mother, are his siblings, Dorothy Spiva and husband Curtis of Hickory, Randy Epley of Hickory and Wanda Fortenberry and husband Ken of Hickory. Also surviving are two nephews, Curtis Spiva Jr. and Michael Spiva, two nieces, Tosha and Misty Epley and one great-niece, Brianna Spiva. services will be held on , 21, 2016 at 12:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Heritage Service with Rev. Bob Roark officiating. Interment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on , from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. at Heritage Service in Valdese. Obituary: Helen Mangum Epley, age 91, of Marion, went to be with the Lord , 26, 2014 at Sunrise Rehabilitation and . She was born 20, 1923 in Norton, Virginia, to the late Arthur and Gladys Mangum. Helens mother died when she was born and she was raised by her mothers sister, Alice Arrington Owens. Helen became the twelfth child in the Owens family and is preceded in death by all in the family except, Sibyl Owens Beals. Mrs. Epley was a long time member of West Court Baptist Church and the WMU ladies. She was a hardworking Christian lady totally devoted to her family. She loved cooking and her children dubbed her Best Cook in the . She worked at various restaurants over the years and her cooking was well known. Folks would often ask, Is Helen working today In addition to her parents and members of the Owens family, she is also preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Robert Ray Epley, Sr. and an infant daughter, Barbara Ann Epley. Surviving Mrs. Epley are one son, Robert Ray Epley, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Sanford, N.C.; two daughters, Bobbie Jean Bennett and her husband, Carl H. of Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Gladys Patricia Pat Epley of Marion; four grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the WMU Ladies of West Court Baptist Church, Hospice of McDowell , and the staff at Sunrise for their special care of their mother during this difficult time. services will be held at 1:00 PM on , 28, 2014 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey in Marion with the Revs. Ross Lewis and Eddie Kirkpatrick officiating. A private burial will follow at Murphys Chapel . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
