Obituary: Elizabeth Dunlop Ensign, Member of One of Pinehurst’s First Families A memorial service will be held at [11: am, , 18, 2014] in the Powell Chapel 160 East New Hampshire Ave in Southern Pines NC with the Reverend Archie Stevens officiating. A devoted wife and mother, Betty is survived by her husband Chester Oscar Ensign Jr, to whom she was married for more than 64 years; two sons, Chester Oscar III (Barbara Huber) of Maplewood, NJ and Steven Willard (Susan Hoopman) of Margate, Florida; granddaughters Emma Katherine Ensign of Brooklyn, NY and Shannon Molzan (Jake) also of Margate, and a great-grandson, Alexander Molzan. Also surviving are Betty’s aunt, Johnsie Daisley of Mentor, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. As the wife of a mining executive, Betty traveled the world with her husband. She lived variously in Bartow, FL; St. Louis, MO; Westport, CT; and White Pine, MI. She was twice President of The Women’s Auxiliary to the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (WAAIME), one of only 2 women to be so honored. Betty was an expert sailor and was for many years a member of the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club in Westport, CT, and the Apostle Island Yacht Club in Bayfield, WI. With her husband Chet, she cruised and raced the waters of the Great Lakes, Long Island Sound, the New England coastline, and the Gulf of Mexico. her husband retired, the Ensigns moved to Fort Myers, Florida, and returned to Pinehurst in 2006, where they have made many friends.
