Obituary: Dorothy Ackerland Erler - written by Ron Erler and Robin Erler Gieniewski Dorothy Ackerland Erler passed away at age 99, on , 14, 2015, twenty-five days short of her 100th birthday. A long time resident of Falls Church, VA, she was married to Merrill J. Erler from 21, 1941 until his death in 2006. Survived by their loving children, Ron (Karen) Erler, and Robin (Bogdan) Gieniewski, grandchildren Melissa (Phil) Baker and Kelly McCaulley, four great-grandchildren, and her niece Mary Ann (David) Thames. Services will be held at Arlington National on , 26, 2016, at 3:00. Participants are requested to assemble at the Old Post Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the Fort Myer Officer's Club. Dorothy Erler had a long, busy, multi-faceted and music-filled life. Of humble Scandinavian extraction, she was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota into a family that, while not professional musicians, had music as a constant presence. In fact, many fun evenings were spent playing in the family and in the living room with her parents and sister. She began her musical journey playing saxophone, eventually picking up the (almost larger than she!) baritone saxophone. So you can imagine the challenges in even transporting the instrument to school and back on foot, and in those below-zero, snowy Minnesota winters! Eventually, she switched to the bassoon and when it came time for college, chose to attend the University of Minnesota, where she met the man who would become her college sweetheart and future husband, Merrill Erler, a trombonist. Following graduation from college, she and Merrill married and cobbled together their personal and professional lives, playing as many gigs as they could find. Dorothy found day work as a teacher of business skills, and played at night with, among other groups, the Duluth Symphony Orchestra. her day job, she would race to the train station to catch the train to Duluth, change into her formal performance clothes on the train, zip to the concert hall, perform the concert and take the train back to Minneapolis - a rather long, but exhilarating day! She eventually found her way into the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, where she was but one of two women. When World War II ended, she and Merrill, who had been in the Pacific in the United States Navy, decided to try their fortunes in Washington, DC, so they packed up and moved east. Her very first concert in Washington, DC turned out to be one of the most amazing and important performances in American music: she performed in the premiere of Aaron Coplands Appalachian Spring at the Library of Congress with the Martha Graham Dance , for which the work was written. Soon after, both she and Merrill joined the National Symphony Orchestra, which, still in its infancy, translates to not earning enough money to live on. So, Merrill joined the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC, and Dorothy, who had studied woodwind instruments in college, became a woodwind doubler (someone who performs on several instruments during a show) in the pit of the National Theatre, where at that time, shows were created and polished before being sent to Broadway. So, she performed and worked for all the big names in musicals (think Rogers and Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Lerner and Lowe, Leonard Bernstein, you get the picture!) and got to play all those new musicals written by the biggest names in the business - pretty fantastic! And in addition to playing the musicals, she held the position of Principal Bassoon in the National Gallery of Art Orchestra for many years, and had a full free-lance career. In her long career in the Washington, D.C. area, she was proud to have performed for five U.S. Presidents. Along with her performance career, Dorothy was a busy music educator who taught many generations of private students in her home studio, as well as clinics and various schools in Fairfax , Virginia. In addition to her career in music, she and Merrill also made time to have two children, who have continued the musical tradition. Ron is a career professional oboist, and Robin, who professionally took a different path, but is a busy and talented flutist. As if all that didn keep them busy enough, Merrill and Dorothy carved out time for another of their passions: square dancing, eventually progressing to the competitive level. Dorothys talent for sewing led to the creation of an absolute rainbow of colors of dance dresses and accessories! Following Dorothy and Merrills retirements from their illustrious musical careers, they continued pursuing their longtime love of travel and began extended trips in their Airstream trailer. But their love of music was not to be denied. both discovered that they missed performing, so they began playing in and mentoring local community groups, which then led to finding places to play as they traveled, many of which were in Florida during their snowbirding. One of the groups with which they affiliated themselves was The Windjammers, an organization of people who love circus band music. These individuals get together at conventions and perform, making for some fun times! The largest convention was always in Sarasota, Florida, also the home of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, whose clowns often came over to support these crazy folks! As Dorothy approached her centennial celebration, she sometimes reflected on how blessed she was for the many wonderful opportunities that had been afforded her and was so thankful for her family and friends, especially her music students, the Falls Church Presbyterian Church, and P.E.O., where she was a member in good standing for over 60 years. |
