Obituary: Gladys I. Distin was born on 25, 1924 in Portland, Jamaica to Burrell Ethelbert Anderson and Elizabeth Jackson Anderson, and was the youngest of four children. She was raised in a Christian home. As a teenager Gladys learned of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and later dedicated her life to the teachings and beliefs to that of the Seventh-Day Adventists. Gladys lost both her parents at an early age and went to live with her older sister Pearl and her husband, Clarence Brimm. Gladys knew at an early age that she wanted to care for others and moved to England to pursue a career in nursing. In addition to becoming a registered nurse, she also completed her training in midwifery. During her time in England she met and married Eric Distin (also from Jamaica). Five children were born to them in England. In 1962, Gladys, Eric and their five young children returned to Jamaica and settled in Frankfield, Jamaica. She was the community nurse at the nearby clinic. While in Frankfield Gladys gave birth to their youngest. A few years later the family moved to Kingston before migrating to the United States in 1971. The family started out in Connecticut and shortly thereafter moved to Brooklyn, New York. Gladys worked the night shift as a registered nurse at Brookdale Hospital which allowed her to be home at the times her children would need her the most. She worked hard and was the head nurse of the medical/surgical unit . In 1984, Gladys moved to Orlando, Florida, to join Eric who had gone ahead with their youngest child in 1979. Gladys continued working as a registered nurse in Orlando until she retired in 1998 to care for her then ailing husband. Over the years Gladys was affectionately known to many as Mom, Grandma and Godmother. She was a devoted and beloved member of East New York SDA Church and later at Pine Hills SDA Church now named Solid Rock SDA Church. Gladys is survived by: Winston “George” Authur “Earle” (Pam) and his children: Andre (Patrice) & Deidre and Grandchildren: Diamond, Darius, Xavier, Nicole, William, Ashley , Joshua “Josh”, Nicholas, Matthew, LeAnn, Dakoda “Cody”, Eric, Ethan Hilary (Hubert), and their children: Sherman (Jasmine), Dwight (Keisha), Jason (Chandra), Alecia, Maurice (Shanta) and Grandchildren: Jordan, Mehki, Jayden, Kaden, Zariah, Cameron, Latrell Beverly and her children: Monique & Vyctorriah Andrea and her children: Kiana, Andrew, Samantha Derek (Gwenneth) and their children: Jason, & Derek, Jr. and Grandchildren: Jhedanl, Leilani, Halo Pam and her daughter: Andrea (Jeffrey) and Grandchild: Sabrina Marie (Lloyd) and their children: Maurice & Andre and Grandchild: Sacha Arthur “Shafto” (Rosie) and their children: Arnulfo, Sheldon, Claude (Crystal) and Grandchildren: Mahkali Dale and her children Cousins: Dorette, Leila, and Minna Long time friends: Louis Scott and Louise Marshall She is also survived by several adopted children and Godchildren; numerous family members here and abroad; Brothers and Sisters in the church, and friends. |
