Obituary: Lt. Col. Robert Henry (Bob) Dewald (USAF Ret), age 91, passed away on , 5, 2016, at his home in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Bob was born on 16, 1924, in Puerto Cortes, Honduras, where his parents, Henry Adam and Gertrude Elizabeth Dewald, were missionaries. Throughout his life, Bob was deeply committed to his family, his faith and his country. Bob grew up in Atlanta, GA, where his father was the church pastor and a skilled craftsman, who encouraged his sons involvement in both his church and his work shop. Bob, who was enamored with flying from an early age, built motor-powered model airplanes among other things. He was drafted into the Army Air Forces and received his silver wings and commission in 1944 at the age of 19. However, WWII ended before he was assigned into combat. Bob flew the P-51D and the F-80C in the Korean War. In 1950, he was involved in the first ever USAF jet air-to-air combat. He was credited with one victory while flying 133 combat missions over Korea. The remainder of his career included tours in Europe and Vietnam. Bob married Nanette Marie (Nan) Davis of Birmingham, AL, on May 31, 1952. Their two sons, Lamar Robert and Thomas Gilbert (Tommy) were born in Portland, OR. As a typical Air Force family, Bob, Nan and kids moved around the U.S. and Europe, until 1968 when Bob retired and the family settled in Fort Walton Beach, FL. He designed their home in the shape of an airplane. Bob began his second career as an elementary school teacher after graduating from the University of West Florida in 1971 and taught for eleven years before retiring again. As an active member of Mary Esther United Methodist Church for over 40 years, Bob was involved in almost all aspects of church life including co-founding and teaching the church Specials school class. He was also a member of the Order of Military Pilots, the Daedalians. Bob and Nans home was a frequent gathering place for family and friends. In turn, they also enjoyed traveling to visit others, including numerous cross country trips made in camper vans Bob built. Bob loved his extended family; and they returned his love and respected his many virtues and accomplishments. He is survived by sons Lamar (wife Lynne, grandson Zachary (wife Kady), granddaughter Hannah of Midland, MI), Tommy (wife Mary, grandson Robert, granddaughter Katie of Arlington, VA), brother Charles (wife Martha of Atlanta, GA), brother-in-law Lamar Davis (Fort Walton Beach), sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis (Birmingham, AL) and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Bob was pre-deceased by wife, Nan; brother, Paul; sisters-in-law Dot Dewald, Gretta Dewald and Bessie Sasser; and brothers-in-law Joe Davis and Sam Sasser. Donations can be made in Bobs name to Mary Esther United Methodist Church, 703 Miracle Strip Parkway, Mary Esther, FL 32569.
