Obituary: Deonath, also known as Baba, was born on 30, 1945 to Harry and Roni Khaman from Industry, Guyana. He was the younger brother of Rita and the older brother of Batie, Sooklall, Suruge and Deolall. He attended school until the sixth standard, and at the age of 14, he began to work at Wales Estate to provide for his parents and siblings. In the following years, he had a series of jobs including being an apprentice at an electric company in Georgetown, a worker in his fathers cane fields, and a fisherman on a trawler. On Dec. 1, 1963, he married Ellen Mangal in Bellevue, Guyana, and in 1964, he became a father with the birth of his eldest son, Kumar. Soon after, Baba and Ellen completed their family with their daughters, Indira and Nadira, and their youngest child, Ravi. Baba dedicated his efforts to many community projects. In Guyana, he helped build the 2nd Street bridge in Bellevue and would replace the streetlights in darkened areas. Vacations, for him, meant finding work around the homes of family and friends to build or repair or devoting time to local building projects. In his late twenties, Baba enlisted in the Guyana Defense Force, where he piloted boats for the army. In 1981, he traveled to Canada for six months, after which he moved to the United States. His early years in the U.S. brought another milestone - the birth of his first grandchild, Kevin, in 1988. Eventually, Baba became a carpenter at Affinia Hotel in New York City, where he was employed until he retired. creating a stable life for his family in New York, his home became a safe haven for many friends and family members from Guyana still working to establish themselves in the U.S. In 2008, Baba retired to Florida with Ellen and his grandsons, Ricky and Michael. During his time in retirement, he indulged in the hobbies he loved most - fishing, gardening, and cooking. In 2014, he witnessed the beginning of another generation of his lineage as his first great grandchild, Flora, came into the world, and the family continued to grow. Baba met someone in 2015 who would quickly become his best friend - his dog, Riley. Their last days together were spent napping and on long walks around the neighborhood. Baba passed away on the morning of Sept. 25, 2017. He is most remembered as an active man who worked hard to provide for his family and who was always looking for a way to help others, especially using his talents and love for carpentry. Baba is survived by his wife, Ellen; their children, Kumar, Indira, Nadira and Ravi; their grandchildren, Kevin, Ricky, Sheena, Riyaad, Micheal, Gabbie, Kamille, Aneisa, Zayna, and Alyssa; their great granddaughter, Flora; and their beloved dog, Riley. |
