Obituary: Vannye Whitfield Dady, 92, fell into her daughters arms and passed away, 17, 2011, at her home in Tallahassee. Vannye Miles Whitfield was born 8, 1918 to Charles and Amanda Whitfield in Calvary GA, and grew up in Reno helping on the family farm. graduating from Cairo High School and business school, Vannye served as a personal Secretary to Admiral Byrds sister in Washington D.C. Later, moving to Tallahassee, she worked as a clerk at Martin & Daltons Drug Store on Adams Street. She met her future husband, Edmund Dady, at a Youth Group meeting at the First Christian Church. were married in 1943, a day after his graduation from the University of Florida and weeks before he entered the Army to serve in World War II. From Tallahassee, Edmund and Vannye moved to San Francisco, where they spent 25 years before moving to Bellevue, Washington and eventually back to Tallahassee in 1970. While raising a family in San Francisco she was passionately involved in helping organize parents of mentally disabled children in their efforts to attain the best care and facilities for their children. This activism attracted the support of Ethel Kennedy and the efforts eventually resulted in the Association for Retarded Citizens. In Bellevue, the family joined Overlake Christian Church in Kirkland, where the fundamentals of the Gospel were preached and taught, and Vannyes love for the Lord ignited! In Tallahassee, she and Edmund became very active with Killearn United Methodist Church where she was a Lay Leader, and "spiritual mom" to many ladies. She was the first President of the Christian Womens Club, active in the Beverly Abel bible study, Women for Responsible Legislation, and Toastmistress, among other groups. Vannye was loved by everyone who knew her. Vivacious, outspoken and compassionate, she had many friends. Leading numerous bible studies, as a Lay Counselor, and through KUMC Ladies Circle, she had a lasting impact on many lives. She loved The Lord and loved her neighbor - she embodied the Great Commandment like few others. She is survived by brothers Charles Whitfield of Woodstock, VA, Hubert Whitfield (Ilene) of Colonial Heights, VA, Carroll Whitfield (Laura) of Tifton, GA, and sisters Peggy Walden (Donald) and Sylvia Collins of Cairo, GA; many nieces and nephews; Sons Timmy Dady of Porterville, CA, Curtis Dady (Cyndi) of Mill Creek, WA, Kevin Dady (Cindy) of Tallahassee and daughter Miriam Dady of Tallahassee; Grandchildren Bryan Dady (Kari) of Kenmore, WA, Allison Smith (Chris) of Redmond, WA, Michelle Bakke (Luke) of Seattle, WA and Jennifer Dady of Tallahassee; and 4 great grandchildren. Vannye was preceded in death by her beloved husband Edmund, and sisters Merle Henderson and Rebecca VanMeter. A visitation will be held , 23 from 2 to 4 pm at Culleys MeadowWood , 700 Timberlane Rd. in Tallahassee.
