Obituary: Family. Pride. Service to others. Strength and resiliency. Triumph over tragedy. Lena Lee (Markette) Demers, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, great aunt, and wife, 94 years young, passed away on , May 31, 2015. Lee was the seventh child born to the late Maria Speno Markette (Domenica Spinosa) and Frank Markette (Francesco etti) on 29, 1920 in Rocky Hill. Lee was a member of the well known Speno family (Speno Ridge in Rocky Hill) and was a direct descendant of the first Italian immigrants to be married in Rocky Hill in 1903. The Speno family immigrated from Corvara, Provincia di Pescara, Abruzzo, Italy via Ellis Island in 1903 and settled in Rocky Hill. Lees family was known for the service they gave on both local and state levels. Service to others was taught to Lee and her siblings at a very early age when they driven around town by their mother in the family truck to deliver baskets full of vegetables and breads to all families in Rocky Hill where husbands and fathers had lost their jobs during the Great Depression. Lee attended and graduated from hairdressing school, but spent her life working for the Rocky Hill Board of Education along with supporting her familys involvement with the food service industry. Lee was an active member of the Campilio Holmes Post 123 of the American Legion Auxiliary and served in many administrative capacities. On 1, 1945, at St. James Church in Rocky Hill, Lee married Adrian Jim Demers from Manchester, NH, whose family immigrated to New Hampshire from a small town outside of Montreal, Quebec. Jim spent his entire career in the banking industry as well as serving the town as Bookkeeper for the Rocky Hill Police Department, eventually becoming the Town Treasurer of Rocky Hill. Lee and Jim were married right after Jim returned a decorated war hero from spending four plus years fighting in the South Pacific during WWII. lived for a brief time in Laconia, NH and then returned to Rocky Hill, where Lee and her siblings were each given a plot of land in Rocky Hill by their father to build homes and start their families. Lee helped her husband, her sister Marion Pia, and her husband Irmo Pia, hand clean 175, 000 bricks to be used to build their two homes. Lee loved to share stories of her familys history with her daughter and grandchildren and would take ours with them, driving around Rocky Hill, Lee pointing out where her father had his vineyards on the Silas Deane Highway, the land sites the family owned, and locations where family members lived and worked. Lee took great pride in supporting her daughters piano and voice recitals, and took special pride in helping her daughter to prepare for her daughters solo ballet recitals held at the Bushnell Memorial in Hartford. Lee was renowned for her extraordinary baking skills, especially for her coconut and chocolate cream pies and the trays of Italian cookies Lee would spend weeks preparing to give out to family and close friends during the Christmas holiday. Lee also had outstanding cooking skills and would prepare meals of gourmet quality regularly for her family. When Lees twin grandson Zak was attending UConn, he took a course entitled Sociology of Food. Zak was quick to relate that preparing and serving meals in his family had nothing to do with filling empty stomachs and everything to do with feeding and nourishing the soul. Lees other twin grandson Shaun developed and learned a level of sensitivity and empathy for others that was the strong foundation Lees family was built upon. Lee and Jim spent the majority of their married life living in Rocky Hill. In 1997, they moved to Simsbury to live with their daughter Denise. Jims passing, Lee became a proud resident of Middlewoods in Farmington in 2007. A few years ago, Lee began living at Arden Courts in Avon, and during the final weeks of her life was a patient at Avon , where Dr. Jeffrey Robbins and the staffs level of caring for Lee was exemplary. Lees family is grateful that Lee was comfortable and afforded the highest level of dignity during her stay at Avon . Lee is survived by her daughter Denise, her twin grandsons Shaun and Zak, her only surviving sibling Sal (Salvino) Markette, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Lee was predeceased by her loving husband Jim, her beautiful granddaughter Kim, and her siblings Marion Pia, Alice Faillace, Mabel DeBella, Margarite Markette, William, John, Dominic, and Nicholas Markette. Lee was thrilled she lived to see another set of twin boys in the family as her brothers John and Sal were also fraternal twins. Denise, Shaun, and Zak want to acknowledge the level of support and caring for Lee that has been shown by Lees niece Inez Faillace, husband Joe, and son David for the past several years of Lees life. truly went above and beyond and were always there for Lee, Denise, and her children. Lee never stopped giving to her daughter. Even as Lees life was ending, she gave her daughter ongoing words of love and encouragement the few times she was able to speak. These last few moments that were shared between a mother and her daughter will help sustain her daughter and are priceless beyond description. We will never cease to be amazed at you, Lena, and will remain eternally grateful that you were ours. Rest in peace our incredible mother and grandmother. You have been an inspiration to us, and we will always keep giving to others less fortunate because of what you and dad have instilled in us. Your soul has finally been set free after all the suffering you have endured over the past several weeks. We will look for your spirit dancing in the wind. Addio nostro bellissimo angelo!
