Obituary: Glenys Mechem Dyer ( 11, 1925 - 17, 2017) Glenys Mechem was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 11, 1925. She grew up in Mount Lebanon, an affluent suburb of Pittsburgh, graduating from Mount Lebanon High School in 1943. She attended Wilson for Women in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania graduating with a BS in Biology in 1947. She then taught Physiology and Zoology at Connecticut for Women in New London, Connecticut. A blind date with a young U.S. Naval officer attending the Submarine School across the Thames River led to marriage with Ensign John C. Dyer, USN, on 24, 1950, at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Glenys set aside her teaching career to raise three daughters - Glenys, born in 1951, Gwyn in 1954, and Sally in 1958. John continued his Naval career as a post-graduate chemical engineering student at MIT, Boston, Massachusetts and then in Admiral Rickovers nuclear power program until John retired from the Navy in 1964 to work at MPR Associates, Inc., Washington, D.C. Glenys then took a job as Science Department secretary and teaching Biology at Washington-Lee High School, Arlington, Virginia until her daughters went off to college. Glenys next volunteered in the Mechanisms Department of the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Washington, D.C., working with the Smithsonian Clockmaker, David Todd, for 16 years. In 2003, Glenys and John moved into Goodwin House Alexandria, Alexandria, Virginia, a continuing care community affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Aware of Alzheimers/dementia in both their families, Glenys and John initiated a number of different efforts to try to cope with mental health degradation. The initial effort was to use a personal computer program PositScience from a firm in San Francisco, California. An outside tutor was hired and regular one hour sessions were held several times a week for several months for GHA residents. Sadly, after several years, PostiScience terminated the effort when it became evident that results were not as beneficial as hoped. Music&Memory was another effort to stimulate Alzheimer patients by music through headsets. Again, sadly, GHA could not find sufficient resident volunteers to sustain the effort beyond the first year. The annual budget process at Goodwin House is thorough and slow, particularly for resident initiated activities. Working with the Goodwin House Foundation, Glenys and John provided initial funding for a new program, Quality of Life (QOL), that encourages activities started by residents and those outside the established budget process. The program is a joint program with Good House Baileys Crossroads and has proven very successful. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National . In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Goodwin House Foundation. |
