Obituary: Edward (Eddie) Charles Deerfield, 74, passed away, with his loving wife by his side at their home, on , 14th, 2016. His heart could no longer keep pace with the passion and vigor with which he approached life. Eddie was born in 1942 to John J. and Dorothy Agnes Walsh Deerfield of Troy, New York. He was their third child, following John J. Jr. and Barbara (Sissy) Ann. He would gain three brothers, William (Bill), Michael (Mickey) and Frederick (Freddy) and sister, Linda. Growing up in a Catholic home, he attended Saint Francis de Sales for primary school and continued to Troy High School. Even though he was born a lefty, the ruler taught him to be a righty. He spent his childhood getting into mischief, playing baseball, causing trouble with his gang of friends and peeling potatoes. No one could peel a potato quite as efficiently as Eddie. At the age of 15 he was orphaned, his father and mother taken away too soon. Not wanting to live with his aunt and uncle, he ran away and eventually was placed at the LaSalle School for Boys, but he ran from there too. A few days before his 17th birthday he tried to enlist in the United States Navy, but they told him to come back in a week, and he did. Following his basic training at the Great Lakes, Little Creek Amphibious Base became home as he was stationed on the USS Dewey. He kept off the lawns of people near base. Following his honorable discharge he decided to keep Hampton Roads his home. In 1969, he welcomed a son, Little Eddie, who was too perfect for this world and had already passed on. In 1973, Patricia Kay graced the world with her arrival. She was his princess. In 1981, Eddie would meet his soul mate Debby. Eddie always having loved younger women, Debby was 20 years his junior. In 1984 they said their vows in a private shot gun wedding as two months later their daughter, Darlene Constance made her entrance. His son Jonathan Michael was born in 1987, completing their family. lived in Hampton, in their humble home. While Eddie worked miscellaneous jobs throughout his life after his Navy service, he found his career with Naval Public Works , presently known as Naval Facilities Engineering Group. He felt his service was an extension of his Navy career and took pride in being able to continue to serve his country. 25 years, 21 of those as a supervisor, he retired. Eddie was also active in the American Legion, serving as 1st Vice Commander at Post 31. He volunteered his time facilitating bingo and mowing the grass at the baseball field. At Post 25 he would cook weekly dinners and have drinks in their lounge. While Eddie did find his career, he felt he missed his true calling, to be a police officer. He supported the local police departments through organizations such as the Fraternal Order Police Associates (Lodge #26) as President and Citizen Police Academy Alumni as Chairman. He was an advocate for all police departments and was Neighborhood Watch Coordinator for more than three decades. The relationships he created with the men and women in blue were treasured by him. Eddie also spent his retirement being a citizen activist, passionately expressing his views and opinions of city management. He worked hard to change the status quo and supported his friends who wanted to run for office by helping manage their campaigns. He worked with the Coalition for Justice for Civil Rights as the executive vice president and was also a member of the purchasing and procurement oversight committee. With the development of Buckroe Beach, he joined the Buckroe Improvement League, trying to preserve the precious water front of Hampton from commercial development. He fought for Fort Monroe to be preserved as a National Treasure. Eddie was just as passionate about his family as he was with his involvement in the community. The example he set for his children carries on his legacy. He was a man who believed in always giving a kiss goodbye and saying I love you, as no one ever knew when it would be their time. He loved passionately and fought even more so. He would stand at the door and wait for his children to drive by so he could wave as they departed. Eddies wife Debby was his soul mate and best friend. walked through hell together and stuck by each others side through it all. In lifes turbulence they knew they always had someone in their corner and they could rise to every challenge they faced together. were each others purpose and their love transcends even through death. The brightest joy for Eddie arrived just a little over a year ago, his granddaughter Adelynn Riley. Anyone he met knew her name and knew she was the most beautiful baby girl he had ever seen. He decorated his walls with pictures of her and would always make sure everyone who walked into his house saw them, not like they could miss it. Whenever she entered a room he would smile and his eyes would light up. She became his little princess. Eddie was preceded in death by his father, mother, brothers - Mickey, Freddy and Bill, sister - Linda, son - Little Eddie and daughter - Patty. Left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy - his best friend, wife and soul mate, Debby, his daughter Dar Nina, his son Jon, son-in-law Chris, granddaughter Adelynn, all of who reside in Hampton. Residing in New York, his brother John J. Deerfield (Marge) and sister Barbara Sissy Ann Chartier (Jim), nieces Bernice Bushey and Lisa Edwards and many other nieces and nephews. And the countless friends through his involvement in the community. arrangements have been confirmed through Parklawn-Wood . Public viewing will continued... |
