Obituary: Claiborne Alexander Duval, Jr., 90, of Beaumont, Texas went to join his Lord Jesus on , 4, 2010. He died peacefully at his home. Claiborne was born 12, 1919 in Austin, Texas where he grew up until his family relocated to Edgewater, Maryland. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in , 1940. Claiborne met his wife, Jerry, while they were attending the University of Texas and they were happily married for 67 years until her death in 2006. Upon Claibornes graduation from the University of Texas, he was hired as a Chemical Engineer at Magnolia Refinery, later known as Mobil Oil Refinery. Except for a short period of living and working for Mobil in the New York City area in the 1960s, Jerry and Claiborne spent the next 40 years in Beaumont raising their family until Claibornes retirement in 1981. During his years with Mobil Oil and Mobil Chemical, Claiborne had many promotions, wrote many articles that were published and had some of his discoveries and processes patented while he was head of Mobil Chemicals Research and Development Lab. Claiborne was a devoted Christian and helped found three Beaumont churches; Gulf Street Church of Christ (later called Ridgewood), Westside Church of Christ and Westgate Church of Christ and one in Westfield, N.J., Echo Lake Church of Christ. He served as an elder at these churches during his time there. Claibornes life was an example of what Jesus can do in you and through you. Above all else he was a really good husband, Dad and Papoo to his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was deeply loved by them all. He was known as Papoo to many of his grandchildrens friends as well, even after they were grown. Claiborne was always actively involved in his community, serving on the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce and after retirement he did volunteer work at the Beaumont Energy Museum. During their marriage, Claiborne and Jerry traveled all over the world together. Claiborne was involved with a First luncheon with a close knit group of retired Mobil engineers that he started after he retired in 1981 that continues to this day. From 1981 until just this past year, Claiborne enjoyed meeting every at 10:00 for coffee at Parkdale Malls food court with a group of his retired Mobil cronies. Claibornes hobbies throughout his life included gardening, photography, fishing, genealogy, and anything pertaining to his beloved Texas Longhorns. Claiborne was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Jerry Austin Duval, his parents, Col. Claiborne Alexander Duval, Sr., and Hazel Angelin Stewart Duval, his brother, Stewart Easton Duval, and his beloved grandsons, Michael Mark Potyk and Lyle Easton Potyk. Claiborne is survived by his son and daughter in law, Claiborne Clay Alexander Duval, III, and Robbie Duval of Beaumont, his daughter and son in law, Angelin Duval Potyk and Michael Potyk of Beaumont; grandchildren, Stephenie Boecher of Kingswood, Nathan Duval and wife Amy of Houston, Kirk and Tara Duval of Austin, Elisabeth Potyk of San Antonio and step granddaughter Dana Stovall of Beaumont, as well as nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister and brother in law Betty and Dr. Harold Burton of Abington Beach, Maryland, his sister and brother in law Dolores and Al Madrid of Tucson, Arizona, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. On , 13, 2010, visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn . services will be at 11:00 a.m. on , 14, 2010 at Forest Lawn , located at 4955 Pine Street, Beaumont, Texas, 77703, (409) 892-5912, with Tony Williams, Minister of Westgate Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont. Following the interment, family and friends may gather at the Westgate Church of Christ Fellowship Hall located at 6390 Westgate Drive in Beaumont. |
