Obituary: DUPRÉ
Diana S. Dupré, loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, pillar of the community, fundraiser extraordinaire, and friend to many passed away , 30, 2011. At the heart of her life and lifes volunteer work was a philosophy that guided her spirit to the very end: to live each day to the fullest. Known her whole life as Sunshine, Diana truly had, in her own words, he zest for life! For over 40 years, she dedicated herself to making San Antonio, and this world, a better place. Some of Dianas fondest memories were from her early high school days at Incarnate Word where one day, to her surprise, the entire high school had assembled to present her with a certificate signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower for a paper she wrote, entitled The Strategic Position of Formosa. On another occasion, she was given an award for a paper she wrote on independence for the handicapped through employment given to her by Fox-Newton, Inc.. Later on, during her years at the University of Texas at Austin the school where she had the honor and privilege of studying with author Jorge Luis Borges, she was nominated by the Speech Department for Outstanding Student of the Year for another paper she wrote, Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative. That theme would resonate for the rest of her life. She graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Languages which eventually led to her being chosen as an exchange student to Europe, and Diana set off on one of her many great adventures. She was selected for an internship with an import/export company in Zurich, Switzerland and was placed with a foreign family. The experience changed her life completely. It was in Europe where Diana received her eal education: a love of classical music, ballet, opera, art, different kinds of food and wine, a passion for travel and a life-long eagerness to continue to learn and be exposed to new things. She returned to the US to help care for her ailing father and upon her return she was hired as Administrative Assistant to CEO and President for a Fortune 500 company. She left upon becoming a newlywed to the man to whom she would be married to for over 44 years. It was during the beginning of this blessed marriage that her love of volunteer work began. Early on, Diana became a member of Opera Action in Dallas and the Pan American Round Table, whose motto was All for One and One for All. During the bicentennial year, she was asked to be the director of all 133 of the Pan American Round Tables in the world. She was the youngest president ever to serve and through her efforts and enthusiasm, members arrived in San Antonio for Pan American Week of the Bi-centennial year from practically every country in the hemisphere. She followed her tenure there with being the youngest President of Sembradores de Amistad, which brought more international close friendships. Active for many years, Diana then became the youngest President of the Opera Guild of the San Antonio Symphony. When the guild was later dropped for lack of Symphony funds, Diana was then asked to form the New Opera Guild of San Antonio. Faced with leading an organization abruptly cut off from funding and from its historic sense of association, Diana rallied a severely demoralized membership and magically reignited their spirit to become the dynamic fund-raising and fund-dispensing independent organization that is now the Opera Guild of San Antonio. Under her presidency, and with her dear friend Cynthia Gamboa, the organizations two fundraising Masquerade Balls were selected the top balls in the city of San Antonio. The success she had with the Opera Guild and her consequential passion for contributing to the arts led to her serving on the San Antonio Symphony big board for nine years, which included many memorable occasions. Diana, while serving on the Symphony board, was the only Bilingual Kinder Concert Chairman, bringing concerts to bilingual preschool children. To quote her good friend, George V. Shaw, In a relatively short period of time, Diana has packed more volunteer services into her life, along with full duties as wife, mother and devoted daughter to an ailing parent than most people in a lifetime. Among other boards, she served on San Antonio 100, Cancer Council, Arts San Antonio, Youth Orchestra of San Antonio, Monte Vista Historical Association, National Conference of Christians and Jews, UTSA Advisory Council Dept. of Fine Arts, PEP State Bar Grievance Committee, and Associates Council of the Baptist System Foundation. She was a Founding Member of South Texas Blood and Tissue and the San Antonio Festival, of which she was also a board member at one point. One of the many accomplishments Diana was most proud of occurred in the Spring of 1985. In May of that year, St. Anthony Elementary School, the oldest private school still in its location in the state of Texas, was forced to close due to lack of funds. Her husband, Daniel Dupré was out of the city on business and Mrs. Dupré convened a group of concerned parents to meet in their home. By that time, Mr. Dupré arrived that morning; they had formed a non-profit board with the purpose of raising funds to keep the school open. By this time, the students had enrolled in other schools but somehow the group managed to reopen the school in of that year with 55 students total in 8 grades. And by the following , there was a waiting list. To this day, the school is open and thriving. Additional achievements were receiving a diploma in interior design from St. Marys University, certified instructor for the Berlitz School of Languages, Outstanding Club Woman of the Year for the San Antonio Express-News in 1980, San Antonio Womens Hall of Fame Nominee, Mayors Commission on the Status of Women under Mayor Lila Cockrell, and being selected to represent the City of continued...
