Obituary: Genevieve Lykes Duncan died peacefully at home on 7, 2010. She was born in Galveston, Texas, on 10, 1914, the daughter of Genevieve Parkhill Lykes d. 1971 and James McKay Lykes d. 1943. She moved to Houston as a young girl. She attended Kincaid School in Houston and developed an interest in art which she held to the end of her life. She studied art at Newcomb in New Orleans and graduated in 1935. In 1936 she married Green Cameron Duncan and they moved to the Soledad Ranch near Freer, Texas, where he was ranch manager for Lykes Bros. Inc. In 1952, the family moved to San Antonio, where Vieve lived for the rest of her life. Her husband died in 2004. Among the greatest joys of her married life was the time she and Cameron spent together hunting and fishing, and she often caught the largest fish. Vieve left us a vivid account of the places she visited in the many sketchbooks she filled with notes, drawings and watercolors. She is survived by three children, F. Bowie Duncan II and wife Helen Boardman of Redding CT; G. Cameron Duncan Jr. and wife Susan Mithun of Santa Fe, NM; and Genevieve L. Duncan of Austin TX; seven grandchildren, James McKay Duncan, Sterrett Gittings Duncan, Eleanor Marguerite Duncan, Robert Bowie Duncan, Lucia Bowie Duncan, Susanna Jacqueline Duncan, and Lily Duncan Snodgrass; three great-grandchildren, Oliver Cameron Duncan, Wilha May Duncan, and Shirley May Silberberg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her youngest son James McKay Duncan and her daughter May Shelmire Duncan predeceased her, as did her sister Frederica Thompson of Houston, her brother James M. Lykes Jr. of Houston, her brother Dick Mayo Lykes of Houston, and her brother Charles P. Lykes of Tampa. Vieve had a deep commitment to the arts in San Antonio, and especially to the Southwest School of Art & Craft, where she served on the Board of Trustees and coordinated the volunteers who worked in the Schools Copper Kitchen lunch room. Later she volunteered in the McNutt Garden Room, and served visitors as a docent of the Schools museum. She helped to endow the Schools Morning Discovery Program for children. She also participated in the Junior League Volunteer Artists in the Classroom program in the public schools. Many other civic and social service organizations benefited from the generosity of Vieves time, talent and resources. She became involved as a volunteer serving homeless families at the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries Shelter shortly after it was organized in 1985, through her membership in Christ Episcopal Church. In 2007, Metropolitan Ministries named its annual award to an outstanding volunteer the Genevieve Duncan Award, in honor of her distinguished service to the homeless and to that organization. Vieve was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church and taught School classes for a number of years. She was also a member of the Laurel Heights Garden Club, the Junior League of San Antonio, and an Associate of Trinity University. She will be remembered as a kind person with true human warmth and generosity. She was a strong and loving role model for her children. The family extends special thanks to Vieves caregivers, Octavia Passmore, Theresa Childs, Bertie Moore, Lillie Taylor, and Valerie Wentworth – and to RN Esther Martinez - for their loving and professional care. A memorial service celebrating Vieves life and reception following will be held at: MEMORIAL SERVICE SATURDAY JANUARY 30, 2010 1:00 P.M. CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 510 BELKNAP PLACE In lieu of the usual remembrances, memorial donations may be made to the Duncan Endowment at San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries, 5254 Blanco Rd., San Antonio 78216; Southwest School of Art & Craft, 300 a St, San Antonio 78205; Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap, 78212; or to a charity of choice. |
