▰ Dan Stern Dreeben, Sr

Died December 25, … More Information
Dan Stern Dreeben, Sr , born November 30, 1929 peacefully entered eternal life with our Lord December 25, 2012 in Texas. Dan was 83. Tags: #Jane #Nathan #Dreeben #Little #Arkansas #Antonio #Danny #Alamo #Texas #Institute #Wentworth #Technology #Boston #Massachusetts #Rifle #Captain #General #Supply #Morris #Olmos #Cartridge #Bare #Brain #Morgan #Chevrolet #Blocker #Hoss #Bonanza #Field #Margie #Adolph #Dannys #Tournament #Camp #Austin #Senior #Muzzle #Pistol #Ercoupe #Elizabeth #Jans #Commerce #Chamber #Admiral #Boysville #Gibbe #Ellen #Falick #Stern #Dans #Margery #Desiree #Dottie #Block #Lynda #Prince #Corky #Evelyn #Critical #Jacob #Aduks #Leslie #Nancy #Odyssey #Sweet #Fair
Obituary: Dan Stern Dreeben, Sr., died at his home on 25, 2012 after a short illness, following several years of declining health. Danny was born 30, 1929 to Jane (Stern) and Nathan Dan Dreeben in Little Rock, Arkansas. Although he moved with his parents to San Antonio, his mothers home, at the age of 9 months, Danny always declared his Arkansas birth proudly. He attended school at San Antonio Academy, Alamo Heights and graduated from Texas Military Institute, class of 1947. He graduated with honors from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts in 1954, where he was president of the Rifle Club and Captain of the Rifle Team. He handmade intricate tools and dies, for which he was offered a teaching position at M.I.T, but the Boston winters convinced him to return to San Antonio. His professional career centered on the food service equipment industry, for many years at General Hotel Supply Co., a family business begun by his grandfather, Morris Stern and continued by his father. Motorcycles, building and re-building them, perhaps even more than riding them, occupied Danny for most of his teenage years. His mother once counted a total of more than forty at one time in their garage in Olmos Park, some of the motorcycles in baskets. Gifted with talented hands and a playful spirit, he delighted family and friends for his lifetime, inventing ingenious toys, amazingly intricate model airplanes, delightfully handmade puns. His sister still treasures her Cartridge in a Bare Tree~ a sturdy twig on a stand decorated with an empty .410 shell. His son has the patented Brain Floss, white cord, about one fourth inch in diameter, to go in one ear and out the other. Of the many we remember fondly, theres also the clear plastic bag containing a telephone cord to a wall jack: The phoneless cord for people who enjoy peace and quiet. He was known for his ability to restore classic and rare automobiles, including a Morgan three-wheeler c. 1939. His first car which he restored was a 1933 Chevrolet. A favorite memory with the little car involved cramming nine classmates including 300lb. Dan Blocker (later the character Hoss on Bonanza) to drive onto the TMI parade ground and all tumble out during Field Day. He and his young bride, Margie, traveled to Boston to his graduate school in a tiny restored antique MG roadster. Learning to target shoot as a youngster with the renowned marksman Adolph Toepperwein led to Dannys lifelong hobby of researching rare guns and pistols. Always a target shooter, never a hunter, he competed at the Texas State Tournament at Camp Mabry in Austin winning the Senior Class Muzzle Loading Pistol Championship at the age of seventeen. He also enjoyed skydiving, soaring, and flying his post-WWII airplane, a 1946 Ercoupe nicknamedDumbo, with his darling wife, Jan Elizabeth (Gibbe), whom he married in 1976. Their precious partnership and marriage ended in 1981 with Jans untimely death at the age of 29. In his younger years Danny devoted himself to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. In 1968 he sold a record 125 memberships to the Chamber, earning him the distinction of a life membership and the award of Admiral in the Texas Navy. He was a lifelong devoted supporter of Boysville and was concerned for the rescue and welfare of abandoned and neglected animals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan Gibbe Dreeben; his parents and his sister, Ellen Dreeben Falick. Danny is survived by his beloved son, Dan Stern Dreeben, Jr.; Dans mother his first wife and his lifelong dear friend, Margery Albach Dreeben; his grandchildren, Desiree Star and Dan Stern Dreeben III; his sister, Dottie Dreeben Block and husband, Gus; several nieces, nephews and his beloved cats, Lynda Elizabeth Too and Prince. His family particularly wishes to thank his devoted friend, Dr. Richard Corky Carnahan, also RN Evelyn Perez and Critical nurses, Jacob, Aduks, Leslie Ann, Nancy and many other kind staff with Odyssey Hospice. At his request there will be no funeral services. Always joyful in the sky, Sweet Danny~ Fair winds prevail~ happy soaring.
