Obituary: J.D. (Jack) Downing, woodworker extraordinaire, died , 2. He was 93 years old. Jack was born in Harwood, Texas, to Henry Etta Inscore Downing and James Harvey Downing. He was the fourth of six children who lived through the hard times of the Great Depression. Jack tried a number of different career paths but wound up driving trains for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and attained top seniority among the engineers with Amtrak. When Jack was 21, he met and married the love of his life, Edith Summers, who was 16. Two children completed the family, and Jack set out to instill in them the values of hard work and perseverance balanced with good times—once the chores were done. He loved traveling and playing games and was proficient at miniature golf, croquet, and was a killer at 42. But Jack found his niche when he retired. He built a workshop, filled it with all sorts of tools and machines and proceeded to make toys, furniture, and any object that challenged his skills. Jack was a favorite with neighbors, especially those who needed help with repairs or just wanted to visit over a cool glass of lemonade. Jack had a strong and sustaining faith in Jesus Christ and was a lay leader in the churches he faithfully attended. He was involved in the music program, led youth groups on ski trips to Colorado, worked with his hands in constructing two churches, and was church treasurer. Later, when his health prevented his going to church, he continued his personal devotions and faithfully supported various ministries. Buddy, a miniature Pomeranian, came along when Jack was in his eighties. Buddy was Jacks very first pet, and they became inseparable, spending their last days together. On just before 7:00 in the morning, Jack was in his bed singing and praying and saying that he was getting ready to go Up Yonder. By sermon time he was walking with Jesus. J.D. Downing is survived by Edith, his wife of 71 years; daughter Marthe Curry; son Jack Dee Downing and wife Linda Dixon; granddaughter Tish Hagee and husband Jim Tucker; grandsons Chris Hagee and wife Brooks Davis, Joshua Downing and wife Jennifer Allerdice, Jonathan Downing and wife Danielle Trafton; great granddaughters Mckenzie and Kassidee Tucker, Caroline Hagee, Kennedy Downing; great grandson William Hagee; sister-in-law Shirley Barry Summers, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
