Obituary: Hilmar Dittmar was born 26, 1918 in a log cabin to John and Hulda Kroll Dittmar. He was the seventh of twelve children. The first ten children were raised in the home, 2 rooms separated with a dog run and an attic room, and then they built a two story home. All the children had chores and were expected to work; Hilmar even remembered babysitting his three and one year old brothers when he was five years old while his mother picked cotton.
Hilmar was baptized at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Doss by Pastor Kluge and confirmed by Pastor Rudolph Becker on 20, 1932. His confirmation verse was Romans 8:28. He was raised a strong Christian man and passed his faith on to many through the family devotions, teaching School, and his daily actions.
Hilmar married Cora Hannemann on 14, 1945; she preceded him in death in 2007. Also preceding him were his grandson Gregory Graydon, his parents and his siblings Elgin, Bill, Bertha, Walter, Louise, Arthur, Arnold, Victor, and Johnny.
Hilmar attended grades one through ten in the Doss school with anywhere from one to five students in his class. There were three teachers for the school. He took his college entrance exam after the tenth grade, passed, and went on to Texas Lutheran thus skipping the eleventh grade. He had many fond memories of TLC and travelled with their choir on trips to the State Fair and even Mexico. At age 19, he taught school in the one room school in Cherry Springs with grades one through seven where he was the only teacher and also at Petersburg. He went back to Southwest Texas Teachers (Texas State University) to attain his Bachelors and Masters degrees. He was a very humble man always saying he wasn as smart as some of his siblings, but he was in the honor society at college. He taught school for 34 years in Comfort, Thrall, Lometa, Pottsville, and Star. Many students returned years later to tell him that he was one of their best teachers.
While teaching, he and Cora lived on a farm and ranch until moving into Hamilton in 1996. Hilmar raised farm crops, sheep, goats, and cattle feeding bales of hay and five gallon buckets of grain until he was almost 80. He was always a very hard working, frugal man due to his German upbringing.
Hilmar was very devoted to his wife and their three children. He was always known as a good man and willing to help wherever needed. He and Cora were remembered by many to welcome new people into the community and for their hospitality.
Hilmar was always known as a man of few words, but when he talked, everyone listened. In his later years, he had a fantastic memory and could tell great stories of his early years. A week before he died, he was giving a community program telling about his ancestors immigration from Germany and stories of his youth.
Hilmar loved a good game of dominoes and was ready to challenge anyone to a game. He grew up playing games with his siblings and continued going strong through his last days at Dove Hill, particularly enjoying dominoes, 42, and skat.
Survivors include daughters Peggy Graydon and husband David of Lebanon, Missouri, Shirley Gerald and husband Bubba of Hamilton, and son, Huntis and wife Stephanie of Austin. Grandchildren are Carla Graydon and fiancé Udi Kalekin, Michael Graydon and wife Michelle, DLayne Brown, Colter Gerald, Eric Dittmar, and Andrew Dittmar. Great grandchildren are Aubree, Ellie, Elizabeth, Bayli, and Tucker. Anna Marie Mentink and Hulda Pearl Tipton are surviving sisters.
Services will be , 28th at 2:00 PM at St. John Lutheran Church in Hamilton with burial in Trinity Lutheran in Pottsville. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM at Riley . Pallbearer will be grandsons and nephews. In leiu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Johns Lutheran church or Hamilton Public library or St. Judes childrens hospital.
