Obituary: Richard Barr Dickey 24, 1926 - 27, 2016 LUBBOCK-Richard B. Dickey, of Lubbock and Clifton, Texas, passed from this life to eternity on Easter , 27, 2016. Richard was born in Huntington Beach, CA on 24, 1926. Mr. Dickey was the only child of Mr. Joel Ray Dickey (J.Ray) and Pauline Bishop Dickey. three years in California, he returned with his parents to Lubbock. The Scoggin-Dickey Motor , formed in 1929 by Mr. A.L. Scoggin and Mr. J. Ray Dickey, was to become the work of his life, both as a young man and continuing for many decades, Richard gave his service, tireless work and leadership to his family company. Mr. Dickey was a 1943 graduate of Lubbock High School, and soon after entered the United States Navy during WWII and served from 1944-1946 while stationed in Hawaii as a Bearcat jet mechanic. completing his service in the Navy, Richard enrolled at Texas Technological , completing his BBA and graduating in 1950. While at Texas Tech, he competed in fencing and led Texas Tech to their first appearance in a national tournament as team captain. He was active in many social clubs including the Saddle Tramps and the Centaur Club. Mr. Dickey was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, and a member of the Rafter Class at FUMC. Richard married his love, Sybil Marie Pierson on May 19, 1951 and had two children, Linda Rae and David Mack Dickey, raising their family in Lubbock. Mr. Dickey continued in service to his company and civic leadership for more than 50 years. graduating from the GM Institute Dealership Management school in 1955, he went on to serve the Buick Zone and Regional Council for six years. In addition to his leadership role as President and CEO of Scoggin- Dickey, he served on the Southwest Rotary Club for 38 years, as a Paul Harris Fellow and on the Board of Directors for four years. As a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Richard served as Athletic Affairs Committee Chairman and the Armed Service Committee. Mr. Dickey served also as volunteer for the United Way for 32 years, in the Speakers Bureau for nine years, and as chairman and board member of the Lubbock Better Business Bureau. Mr. Dickey served also on the Board of Directors for the Lubbock Boys Club, and Board of Trustee member for St. Mary of the Plains Hospital in 1985. The Navy fostered his love for sailing, a sport he enjoyed all of his life, from being a spectator at the America's Cup to competing late in life at the Sky Valley Yacht club in La Quinta, California. He was competitive in sailing, skiing, sport shooting and motocross, and as a longtime member of the Lubbock Country Club, tennis and golf. Richard's love for golf led to a position on the USGA Sectional Affairs Committee and the Texas Golf Association (TGA) Board of Directors, his love of fishing led him on especially adventurous trips along the Amazon and the great mountain lakes and rivers of the United States. Mr. Dickey was a lifetime supporter of Texas Tech University, believing strongly in the importance of education and the integral part and leadership role the University supported in the growing Lubbock community. Richard proudly served the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association on the Board of Directors for ten years, and the Texas Tech University Athletic Council from 1973-1977. The value of education was a priority for Mr. Dickey, and together with his father J. Ray Dickey and wife Sybil, created permanent endowed scholarships in the School of Music for performance and education majors, and in the School of Art in memory of their son, David, for emphasis on photography. Many hundreds of students over the past thirty years have received assistance through these scholarships, leaving a legacy of generosity and dedication of study to performance and craft. retiring from Scoggin-Dickey Chevrolet Buick in 1996 at age seventy, he embarked on continuous travel adventures with his wife, Sybil, daughter, Linda, and grandchildren. His love for travel and sport was legendary; he skied the Alps of Switzerland in St. Moritz and Davos, and was a fearless ski instructor to his kids on slopes of Aspen and Crested Butte. Richard fished the Amazon in Brazil, the seas in Costa Rica and Greece. He sailed the Caribbean with his friends and his love, Sybil on numerous trips around the islands. Richard had a true spirit for adventure, a love of music and family that will remain unsurpassed. He leaves a legacy of distinguished service to his community and love for his family. Memorial Services will be , 5, 2016, 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, downtown. Reception immediately following for friends and family at the church.
