Obituary: Ronald LeRoy DeSpain As the gates of heaven opened on 27, 2010, Ronald LeRoy DeSpain found his beloved parents, four brothers, and many friends waiting for him with open arms. Ronald was born on 9, 1940, to Ora and Opal Adams Beene DeSpain near Gate, Oklahoma. His heavenly Father took him home at Silverado Memory Living at Cypresswood in Houston, Texas. Ron grew up and attended grade school at Gate, and Straight, Oklahoma. As a young man, Ron was very active in Boy Scouts where he received many honors which included the Order of the Arrow, God and Country and Eagle Scout Award. He graduated from Hooker High School where he was an honor student, president to the senior class, and an outstanding athlete. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University then graduated from Panhandle A&M in Goodwell, Oklahoma with a teaching degree. While teaching school, he completed the Masters program in counseling at Emporia State University; later, he received his Doctorate degree of higher education from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. His teaching career took him from Liberal, Kansas, to Monte Vista, Colorado, then to Amarillo, Texas. In his later years, he served as President of Texas State Technical in Amarillo, Texas. One of Rons greatest assets was he loved each student he came in contact with and inspired many to continue their education. Ron was a member of the St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Amarillo. He also was a deacon, elder, and treasurer for many years at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Amarillo prior to joining St. Stephens. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, Kiwanis International, and served on many state education boards and committees. On 25, 1961, he married Arvia Smith in Guymon, Oklahoma. To this union, four children were born. Teri, Tim, Todd and Tricia were the apples of his eye. Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Arvia DeSpain of Houston, Texas; two sons, Tim and Christi DeSpain of Houston, Texas; Todd and Michelle DeSpain of Katy, Texas; two daughters, Teri Meil of Amarillo, Texas; Tricia and James Mize of Humble, Texas; a foreign exchange daughter, Noor Asni Fattah of Jakarta, Indonesia; grandchildren, Beck and Madison Claer DeSpain, Tyler and Taylor DeSpain, Brett Meil, Micha and Mason Mize, Justin Williams, Michael and Mark Meil, and Lauren DeSpain. Other survivors include three brothers, Tracy and Geneva Beene of Lee Summitt, Missouri; John and ReJeanna DeSpain of Goodwell, Oklahoma; Donald DeSpain of Guymon, Oklahoma; two sisters, Louise Armstrong of Cunningham, Kansas; Laura and Jerry Hill of Guymon, Oklahoma; mother-in-law Etta Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Ann and Edward LaBreck of Omaha, Nebraska; Nancy and Michael Hale of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a special niece Diane and Neil Strong of Houston, Texas; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Opal DeSpain and four brothers, C.E. Beene, O.J, Charles, and Gary DeSpain; father-in-law The Reverend Clarence Smith; and sister-in-law Mary DeSpain. and burial services will be held at Memorial Park in Amarillo, Texas on , 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Family visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. , 31, 2010. Obituary: Nona DeSpain (76) was born in Orange, California and passed peacefully from this life on 16, 2016 in Austin Texas. Nona loved family and friends and was visited and contacted by many in the last days of her life. She enjoyed time with her friends at the South Austin Senior Activity and was known to be quite adept with a pool cue. She was a native Californian and moved to Austin 10 years ago to be closer to her daughter and her grandchildren. She was the mother of 3 children (Butch DeSpain, Bitsy DeSpain Speirs and Tony DeSpain). She was preceded in death by her eldest son Butch and is survived by Bitsy Speirs of Austin, Texas and Tony DeSpain of San Leandro, California. Nona is also survived by 3 grandchildren; Jacob, and Joshua Speirs, and Sarah Speirs Brown, as well as 4 great-grandchildren. Nona was the eldest of 5 Children born to Elario Duarte and Helen Valverde Duarte. Her surviving siblings are Tito Duarte, Kitty Jaramillo, both of Fullerton, California and Frankie Duarte of Pensacola, Florida. Lito Duarte preceded her in death. Her love of music caused Nona to be elected the President of the Musicians Wives Club of Orange California and organized many festivals, activities and charity events. Though she was a native Californian, she was an avid Washington Redskins football fan. Her smile, contagious laugh and warm heart will be greatly missed. She is deeply loved by family but all are grateful that her ongoing battle with cancer is now over. The family wishes to thank the entire staffs of Brookdale Beckett Meadows Assisted Living and the Hospice Austin for their kind and tender care of Nona during the final days of her life. |

Obituary: Louis V. deSpain Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend, Louis V. deSpain, departed this world on , 24, 2015. He was born in Gouldbusk (Coleman ), Texas on 12, 1935 and succumb to lung cancer after a lengthy illness at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lily Mae Pearl DeSpain and James Ratliff DeSpain, infant brothers Dennis and Donald, and sisters, Merle Sanders, Ruth DeSpain, and Edie Cravey and beloved brother-in-law Jessie Cravey. He is survived by his husband of over 35 years, Kenneth L (Ken) Newman, daughters Annette Kast (husband David Kast), Darla Monette Peterson (husband David Werner), grandchildren Ivory Anderson, Loison Kast, Logan Kast, brothers Wayne DeSpain (wife Ann DeSpain) and Johnnie DeSpain (wife Chris DeSpain), nieces and nephews, Judy Hovey, Roger (Buck) Vail, Steve Cravey, Mike Cravey, Gary Cravey, Donna Palmer, Becky Connell, Lee Ann Havelka, Wendy Guerra, Melissa Schroeder, Pam Ratliff, Karen Cozby, Paula Bode, and numerous great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins. He was raised in several farming communities in west Texas, including Little Saline, London, Kerrville, Marble Falls and Belton. In the 1950s, he graduated from Austins Nixon-Clay Business and worked for a construction company in Austin. When he could no longer ignore the call to the ministry, he enrolled and graduated from a bible college in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was married, ordained and began his ministry in Golina Park, Texas, where his two daughters were born. four years of marriage, he divorced and moved to San Francisco, California. This period of his life was chronicled in a chapter of the book But Lord e Gay by Rev. Sylvia Pennington. He worked for a large leasing company, graduated from a school of fashion design, taught costume history, formed his own fashion design business, and also continued his ministry with the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches at MCC San Francisco. living 19 years in San Francisco, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he pastored MCC Albuquerque and met the man who became his husband. moved to Austin, Texas to be closer to Louis family, where he served for a time as assistant minister at MCC Austin, then moving on to health care work and Occupational Therapist with Brown Schools Ranch Treatment . He retired and he and his husband moved to a historic home in Bastrop, Texas. Louis volunteered his time as costume designer/maker and managed reservations and ticketing for the Bastrop Opera House, and taught porcelain doll making for Austin Department of Recreation while making and selling his own dolls. such an active and talented life, he has gained many, many treasured friendships. Louis will be sorely missed by his family, friends and acquaintances. He leaves this world a richer and more loving place having shared his affection and wisdom with all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
