Obituary: Ruth Helen Holmes, known to most here today as Helen Denton, was born on May 18, 1928 on the eastern side of Paris Texas, Lamar , to Grace Elena Kemp Holmes and Joseph L. Holmes. She attended East Paris Elementary School and graduated from Paris High School in May of 1946. She worked several jobs including Kress Department Store until 1948 when she began work as a long distance operator with Southwestern Bell Telephone in the Paris office. She remained there until 1953 when SW Bell adopted a new system, and many of the long distance operators had to leave the Paris office to continue in metropolitan offices. Helen transferred to the 4100 Bryan Ave. location in Dallas. While living in Paris, she attended the Lamar Avenue Church of Christ. Helen met Billy Joe Denton at the Skillman Avenue Church of Christ while singing in the television chorus. dated off and on for three years until the summer of 1958 when they became engaged on 31st, and were married on 21 by John Banister. spent their first year of marriage on Marquita Ave. in Dallas before moving to their permanent address on Sheryl Drive in Mesquite on 10, 1959. Helen continued to work with SW Bell until 1962 when she went on pregnancy leave. Darla Jean Denton was born on 15, 1963 to the happy couple. She left SW Bell permanently after Darla was born. Two years later, on 19, 1965, they welcomed the birth of their son, Barry Clay Denton. Bill and Helen began attending the Garland Road Church of Christ in 1959, and were members there which later became Highland Oaks Church of Christ until 1994. Bill served as a Deacon from 1971 till 1990. Helen taught in the 5 year old classes at Garland Road. She always had some thrilling stories to tell about those days with the kids. Another activity that brought her great joy was making food for those in distress, and ministering in song at weddings and funerals.Helen returned to the business world again in 1979 with Watson Electric Supply , and retired from there in 1991. Helen became a grandmother in 1989 with the birth of her only grandchild, Trevor Dickson. She spent all her free time doting on this little one even after he became a big boy.Helen and Billy came to Saturn Road Church of Christ in 1994 where they have been active in church activities and enjoyed some of the greatest fellowship of their lives.Her health began to fail in 2003 when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. By God’s grace, after 9 months of treatment, she was declared in remission.Four and a half years ago she began her struggle with Dementia, which progressively limited her activities. Although she eventually was no longer able to attend church and enjoy fellowship in the congregation, her love for God and her church family only grew stronger.Helen lost consciousness on evening 20th, but woke up in heaven forever around sunrise on morning 22, 2015, where she has now met her Savior face to face.Preceded in death by her father and mother: Joseph L. and Grace Elena Holmes, brother Joe L. Holmes, Jr., brother William Howard Holmes and wife Charlene Holmes, and brother Thomas Henry Holmes.Helen is survived by her husband of 57 years Billy Joe Denton, daughter Darla Jean Sorensen and husband Robert William Sorensen, son Barry Clay Denton, grandson Trevor Thomas Dickson, sisters-in-law Francis Holmes, Margie Jaco, Mary Ann Chambers, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. |

Obituary: Philip Phil Austin Denton, 78, of Houston, TX, graduated to heaven on 12, 2017. Above all else, Phil was a man of strong Christian faith, confident that all of his mistakes were completely forgiven by our graceful God the moment he accepted Gods free gift of salvation through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. Gods grace and provision set him free from the bondage of sin, not his own good deeds. Though we will greatly miss him, we are comforted most by our knowledge that Phil has left this broken world to forever rejoice in his loving Creators presence. Phil and his twin brother, William Bill, were born on 7, 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Lawrence Elmer and Ruby Denton, joining their older brother, John. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1942. Phil became an Eagle Scout in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957, serving his country for 8 years in both active and reserve capacities. He attended Central Missouri State Teachers , where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He graduated with a degree in Economics in 1963. He married his sweetheart, Mary Ann Denton (Olsson) in 1971. Son, Brian Thomas Denton, was born in 1973, and daughter, Julie Ann Browning, was born in 1979. Phil was a valued and loyal employee, working as a financial analyst in the oil industry. Surviving many mergers and moving twice, first to Tulsa, OK and then to Houston, TX, he worked for Skelly, Getty, Texaco, Star Enterprise, Equiva and Shell Oil Companies. He retired from Shell in 2000 as a Wholesale Credit Manager after 30 years of diligent service. Though a man of few words, Phil had a playful personality and was a joy to be near. He was a devoted husband to Mary Ann, who he considered to be he only one for him, for 45 blessed years. Phil was also a loving father to his children, Brian and Julie, and an adoring grandfather to Hannah, Natalie, Katie and David. His character was steadfast, always modeling faithfulness and integrity. Phil is survived by his beloved bride, Mary Ann Denton; son, Brian T. Denton, and his wife, Jennifer Jenni, and their daughters, Hannah and Natalie; daughter, Julie Ann Browning, and her husband, Andrew, and their children, Katherine Katie and David; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ruby, and brothers, Bill and John. A memorial service will be held at Berachah Church, 2815 Sage Road, Houston, TX 77056 on , 24, 2017 at 11 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated at Compassion International or Joslin Diabetes . Our family wishes to thank Houston Hospice for the fantastic care they provided to Phil and our family, especially his angelic nurses Amy and Karla. |
