Obituary: Emily Violet Sitton Denison, 92, passed away 18, 2015 in Georgetown, TX. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. , 23, at the Ramsey , 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, TX. A private family burial service will take place at the Georgetown IOOF prior to the service. Emily requested that her funeral be a celebration of her full and rewarding life…not a dirge. In accordance with her wishes, her celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , 24, at the Georgetown First Baptist Church, 1333 W. University. Emily was born 4, 1922 in Abilene, TX to John Franklin and Vera May (Harlan) Sitton. She lived in Floydada, TX until she was 8, and then the family moved to a farm near Petersburg, TX due to the Depression and dust bowl drought. She graduated from Petersburg HS as the class of 1939 Valedictorian. She started college at the age of 16 at Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX, and graduated in 1943 with a degree in English. At Tech she met and fell in love with Carl William (C.W.) Denison, Jr. married three months after they graduated on 1, 1943. For the next seven years they lived in Lubbock where C.W. taught at Tech in the Dairy Engineering Department. Emily was a homemaker and mother to a daughter Jan and a son Bob born during this period. C.W. wanted to be his own boss, and in 1950 he took the opportunity to move 45 miles south of Lubbock to Brownfield, TX where he began working as an independent heating and AC contractor. Their third child, a daughter Carol, was born in Brownfield, completing the family. During the 28 years she lived in Brownfield, Emilys primary focus was her children. She and C.W. never missed attending their childrens piano recitals, band concerts, Little League baseball games, and high school play performances. were passionate about travel even with three children who complained frequently that their brother/sister was \touching them. Each summer the family loaded up the station wagon and took 2-3 week vacations driving long distances to scenic sites in western states, Disneyland, and even Canada. Emily was also deeply involved in the activities of the Brownfield First Baptist Church. She taught School, was a very active member of the churchs womens groups, was involved in VBS, and volunteered to cook and clean for countless banquets, funerals, and weddings. She made sure her children attended church, were members of the youth organizations, and went to summer Bible camps. She took them shopping to pick out their clothes, especially the girls Easter outfits complete with hats, gloves, purses, and new shoes. She also was C.W.s business assistant, keeping the books and scheduling work calls. In 1978 after the children had left the nest, C.W. and Emily shocked their friends and family by selling the business and house in Brownfield and moving to Georgetown where they didn know a soul. chose Georgetown because it was a small college town of about 12,000 citizens, it was near the larger city of Austin, and had trees and water that prevented sandstorms that they had frequently experienced when they lived in the Texas Panhandle. Although retired, they quickly volunteered for multiple activities at the First Baptist Church, worked one day a week at The Caring Place, and Emily became an invaluable member of the Georgetown Study Club. made time for fun and relaxation also, often playing 42 and other games with friends, and going fishing at nearby lakes. Their greatest joy was to drive their RV to the upper New England states each fall and spend a month following the changing of autumn leaves as they traveled south back to Georgetown. There were frequent visits with their children and grandchildren. were happy to be retired in Georgetown, and you rarely saw one without seeing the other. On 20, 1991 Emilys beloved husband of 48 years suddenly died. The adjustment to being alone was difficult, but she gradually took charge of this new phase of her life. She sold the large house they had bought when they moved to Georgetown and built a smaller one. She devoted even more time to her church and her study club activities. She continued to volunteer at The Caring Place, receiving a plaque for 20-years of dedicated service. For 10 years she was the principal caregiver of her older sister, Lois Allen. She made frequent trips to visit her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. On her 80th birthday, she and her three children made a trip to New Hampshire to recapture the magic of seeing the brilliant fall foliage she loved so much. In 2008 she moved to Knoxville, TN to be near her son and three of her grandchildren and their families. However, she concluded that she was a Texan at heart and moved back to Georgetown in 2011. She made her home in the newly-opened Wesleyan at Estrella Assisted Living . She happily rejoined the First Baptist Church, attended Georgetown Study Club meetings, and participated in activities at the Wesleyan until recent health issues affected her mobility. She died peacefully while sitting in her favorite chair in her apartment at the Wesleyan. Her family and friends knew her as a woman of many talents. She loved words; it was very rare for anyone to beat her in a spirited game of Scrabble. She worked the newspapers crossword puzzle each day. She kept up with current events and how her favorite sport teams were faring each season (especially her beloved Texas Tech Red Raiders). She was an accomplished speaker and an excellent writer. She was witty and charming and a great story teller. She was particular about her personal appearance and kept her homes spotless and organized. Most of all she loved her family. Emily summed up her life when she wrote, The most important thing I have done was to marry the love of continued...
