Obituary: Roxie Ann (Selby) Dearmore Born 20, 1927 Born again 1935 Went home to be with her Lord 8, 2016 Roxie Ann Selby was born to Earl and Betty Selby as the fourth of five children and has been preceded to heaven by her husband, Roy Franklin Dearmore, her eldest grandson Eric, her parents, Earl and Betty, her sisters Maxine and Lorene, and her brother Earl Jr. She is survived by her younger sister, Dorothy Ricker and her husband Francis Ricker of Cheyenne, Wyoming, her daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Neil McElhannon of Garland, TX, her son and daughter-in-law, Franklin and Rose Dearmore of Manaus, Brazil, her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Jeff Dendler of Garland, TX, her daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Chris Bell of Edmund, OK and 9 grandchildren. Roxie graduated from Springfield Senior High School in Springfield, MO and attended High Street Baptist Church in Springfield. She moved to Fort Worth, Tx with her best friend Georgia Reynolds in 1947 to attend Bible Baptist Seminary and became a member of Jennings Avenue Baptist church. This church had been started by Dr. Benjamin Franklin Dearmore and she worked part time as his secretary. Dr. Dearmore and his wife Mineola had six children, the youngest of who was Roy Franklin, who was 13 at the time Roxie met him and who she thought was "a somewhat arrogant little boy" at that time. Now fortunately for Roy, he grew on Roxie and at the ages of 17 and 25, they became Mr. and Mrs. Roy Dearmore on 9, 1952. Roxie had 4 children, Carol Ann 1953, Franklin 1959, Susan 1965 and Brenda 1970. In the meantime, Roxie worked at the Dallas Juvenile Department on Harry Hines to help put Roy through medical school at Southwestern Medical School, earning the amazing sum of $217 a month for which she worked very hard. Roxie and Roy went on a yearlong deputation throughout the United States to establish a base of support from many wonderful Baptist churches to enable them to go to the mission field in the Congo, Africa for the first time 1961. Roxie stayed in a hotel in Leopoldville, Congo for 2 months on her own with Carol Ann and Franklin, knowing about 5 words of French and not knowing any adults with whom to have fellowship. She was a thrifty wife and helped the mission work by making hot chocolate for their breakfast and soup and sandwiches for lunch and supper because meals at the hotel were expensive. Meanwhile, Roy purchased a 1962 Dodge Power Wagon and made a couple of exploratory trips into the bush land to find where the Lord wanted them to start the mission. then bravely set out and arrived at a mission called Zena Bukete (meaning Lovely Name), approximately 80 miles from where they planned to build the mission. named the mission Mongo wa Nkenda, (meaning Hill of Kindness) because it overlooked the Kwango River which was the border between the Congo and Angola. Roxie, Carol Ann and Franklin stayed at Zena Bukete for 2 months eating meals she prepared on a hot plate with little variety in groceries, although she contrived to make fried biscuits for them. Happily, she even stayed cool when Franklin came running to tell her that there was a big butterfly in the bedroom and it turned out to be a big black bat. She went to the mission Mongo wa Nkenda in 1962 and provided courage, love and strength to both her family and the mission work till 1972 when a governmental decree stated that the missionaries must join a one world church ecumenical program and which these brave missionaries refused to do, as they believed that Biblical mission work is sponsored and supported by the local church, in this case, hundreds of Baptist churches in the United States. Roy, Roxie and Franklin, Susan and Brenda went to the mission field in Brazil in 1973 and were there until 1983 when the doors opened to them again in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Roy, Roxie and Brenda returned to Africa to work at an outpost of the original mission until 1993 when they felt the Lord was leading them to return to the US where Roy could engage in writing books for training ministers and missionaries. Roxie was diagnosed with pulmonary blood clots and began to require oxygen fulltime. She managed quite well until the early 2000’s when her physical activities became limited and eventually brought about her confinement to her home with occasional trips to doctors and Wal-Mart. She and Roy played a daily game of Acquire and kept their thought processes very active while enjoying each other’s company. Roxie had a great sense of humor and kept the family laughing. many years of providing untiring and loving care for her family, she became the recipient of loving care from her family and gradually declined in health until her life was basically in the den of her home in an easy chair as far as ambulatory activities. As her physical capabilities declined, we were so grateful that her mind was still very clear and active. She was a tremendous prayer warrior and was the light of Roy’s life until he departed this earth on 7, 2015 after a totally unexpected massive heart attack. She picked up the pieces of her life with the help of her children, studying her Bible daily and engaging in her artistic side by becoming involved in adult art work at which she was amazingly good. She kept up with the news and the political scene and the activities of her family and could still beat her children at Scrabble. Roxie kept the faith and fought a good fight till 8, 2016 when only 6 months and a day after her loving husband went to be with the Lord, she was reunited with Roy amidst great rejoicing. The Lord surely said to her “Welcome home, good and faithful daughter!” |
