Obituary: Dorothy M. Dawson services for Dorothy M. "Dottie" Dawson, 88, of Killeen, will be at 2 p.m. at St. Christophers Episcopal Church in Killeen. The Rev. Paul Moore will officiate with burial following at Killeen City . Mrs. Dawson died Jan. 5, 2010, in a Killeen nursing home. She was born 15, 1921, in La Coste to Morris Earl and Carrie Lula (Perkins) Weiss. She married Arch Dawson Feb. 25, 1939, in San Antonio. She was 17, and he was enlisted in the Army, living in the barracks at Fort Sam Houston. He did not have permission to marry and had to sneak out after lights out to see his bride. were married 55 years when he died in 1994. She was a homemaker and a devoted member of St. Christophers Episcopal Church. Mrs. Dawson was the Killeen Kangaroo lady. In the 1970s, she created and made the maroon felt Kangaroos that were so popular with the Killeen High School students. Her home was often the gathering place for the "kids" from KHS. Her kitchen was a place of refuge for all her friends. There was always a fresh pot of coffee ready to share along with a sympathetic ear. Mrs. Dawson loved to bowl and was on a mixed league on nights and a ladies league on s. When the ladies became too old to bowl, they became the lunch bunch and dined together every . She was a talented and creative seamstress. She would see a dress on a mannequin and go home and recreate it perfectly. Knitting and crocheting came easily, and all her family members and many friends owned her originals. She will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch; a son, Robert Lee "Hank"; a brother, Maurice Earl Weiss; and an infant sister, Alice. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Christian and her husband, Don, of Killeen and Melinda Dawson Gilbert and her husband, Doug, of Lansing, Kan.; six grandchildren, Cynthia Ann Corder, Nancy Lou Christian, Kimberly Erin Bristol, Kathleen Spencer Gilbert, Sean Michael Gilbert and Matthew Lee Dawson; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa Louann Corder, Meghan Kathleen Corder, Nathaniel Christian Corder, Matthew Dawson and Wynter Bristol, a baby girl, on the way. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford-Bowers in Killeen. Memorials made be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Daughter of Charles and Martha Dawson, Deanna grew up in Dallas, graduated from Skyline High School where she was on the Silhouettes Drill team, then continued her education at Stephen F. Austin University where she earned a Journalism Degree and became a Chi Omega. graduation, Dee went to work in sports advertising for Athletic Supply then went on to a long-term career with AT&T. When not working, Dee loved to watch the Dallas Cowboys, go camping with her friends, watch her nephews and niece play sports, travel to New Orleans, host her family on holidays, and spend time with her dogs. Dee was a lifelong member of the church. She was baptized as an infant at Meneely Memorial Presbyterian and later as an adult at Eastminster Presbyterian. Dee was loved by all and gave unconditionally. She was the BEST! She will be missed every day. Obituary: Darlene Dawson passed away surrounded by family 18, 2014 at her residence in Waco. Services will be held 11:00 a.m., , 22, at Connally Compton Directors Chapel with Brother Carrol Hambrick officiating. Burial will follow in Lorena . The family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., , 21, at Connally Compton Directors. Darlene (Chubby) was born to Ray and Welda (Herbelin) Stanley 25, 1944. Mom was an outgoing and adventurous child. She loved riding her bike, skating, and climbing trees. This all came to a halt in 1954, when she was stricken with polio where for a short time she was paralyzed from the neck down. months of therapy, pain, and pure determination, she walked again. She started on a walker, then crutches, until eventually she was able to walk independently. Darlene attended Waco High on Columbus Avenue where she walked up and down the three flights of stairs there, where no 2 classes were on the same floor. In 1964, Darlene went to Waco Beauty School and became a cosmetologist. She kept her beauty license up to date for 30 years. In 1979, she graduated from MCC with an associates degree in long term health. She then worked as an assistant administrator at Pleasant Manor, Administrator of Bellmead . She ultimately found her passion in life as an Activities Director at Inn of Waco. Mom enjoyed working for the residence instead of the state. Darlene was outgoing and always had a smile on her face. Sept 1964, Darlene met Wayne Dawson. The same night he met her, he told her, he was going to marry her. She laughed him off. However, on 16, 1965, Darlene and Wayne were married in a simple ceremony. Mom was under the impression she couldn have children, but the doctor actually said she would have a hard time having children. So, what a surprise in of 1965, their beautiful fair skinned, blue eyed baby daughter, Robin was born, and then their family was completed in of 1970 when their beautiful brown eyed baby girl, Jeannie was born. Darlene is preceded in death by her grandparents, George, and Della Herbelin, father, Ray Stanley, brother, Jackie Stanley, mother-in-law, Marie Dawson, father in law, Dick Dawson, as well as several great uncles, great aunts, and cousins. Left to remember and miss Darlene and cherish her memories is husband, Loyd (Wayne) Dawson, daughters, Robin and husband John Fowler, Jeannie and husband Scott Eason. Mother, Welda Stanley; grandchildren Jeannie Buro, Robert Docherty, Collin Fowler, Brianna Docherty, Jason Eason, Olivia Eason, and Aidan Fowler. Honorary son, TJ Stankiewicz and wife Dena and their children, Teddy, Tiffany, and Amelia. Several adopted great grandchildren.
