Obituary: DAVIS Franklin Coley Davis, Jr. Frank was born on 19, 1908 in his familyÂs home at 509 W. French Place, San Antonio, Texas. He was the eldest child of F.C. Davis and Mary Pace Bond Davis. He passed away at home on 24, 2007, in San Antonio. He was the grandson of Rev. Nicholas A. Davis, Chaplain of the 4th Regiment in HoodÂs Texas Brigade during the Civil War and an early trustee of Trinity University. Frank was baptized, attended school, married and was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio. He attended Travis Elementary school, the San Antonio Academy and Texas Military Institute. As a young man, he worked for the City Public Service in various capacities until the beginning of World War II. During the war, he was a flight instructor, teaching basic training to beginning students until they could solo. the war, he opened the Davis Flying School in San Antonio located on the Davis Family farm, and continued to teach eager students returning from the war how to fly. He taught many people in the area how to fly and kept many of those friendships. He always enjoyed the outdoors. Throughout his life he also enjoyed hunting and fellowship it fostered with family and close friends. He had many hobbies, which included working on his planes, his volkswagens, maintaining the yard, the family farm property, and raising parakeets. One of his favorite hobbies was relating the history and genealogy of early San Antonio to his friends and family. Many people knew him as a walking encyclopedia of early San Antonio history and Texas politics. As a child, he and his father attended several Democratic National Conventions. The secret to his long life was a loving family, good friends, and an active lifestyle. He was a member of the Order of the Alamo and the German Club. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Armitage Davis. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Davis Austin and her husband, Edward H. Austin and by his brother Bond Davis. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Armitage Davis, San Antonio; Frank C. Davis III and his wife, Carol Lee Barker Davis, Dallas, Texas and their children, Franklin C. Davis IV, Pierce G. Davis and Elizabeth P. Davis. In addition he is survived by his sister-in-law, Olive F. Davis, San Antonio; nieces, Mimi Austin Hart and her three children and her four grandchildren of San Antonio and Houston, Betty Austin Conner and her husband, William P. Conner, and their two children of Houston; Carol E. Davis West and her husband, David B. West and their three children, San Antonio; Mary A. Davis Wilde and husband, Stephen B. Wilde, San Antonio; Hallie F. Davis Doyle and her husband, Michael Doyle and their twin sons, Greenwood Village, Colorado; nephew, Edward H. Austin, Jr. and his wife, Ruth C. Austin, San Antonio, and their two children; nephew, Reagan H. Davis, San Antonio; cousins, Floyd McGown III, Nancy McGown Minor and husband David Minor, Andrew McGown, Marjorie M. Sharpley, Caroline S. Quinn and her husband, Matthew Quinn and son, Campbell M. Stuart, all of San Antonio; and Gammon Sharpley and his wife, Marieelen, Paris, France, and other numerous cousins; a host of friends, neighbors and caregivers. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the caregivers who attended Mr. Davis in the last few years. |
