Obituary: Pearl was born on 9, 1927, the middle child and only daughter of Armenian immigrants, Armenag Terzybashian and Sarah Yeghoyan. Armenag changed his name to Arthur Taylor shortly after arriving in the United States, and enlisted to serve during in World War I. Meanwhile, Sarah, her siblings, father (the Rev. Asadoor Z. Yeghoyan), and stepmother were in Armenia hidden in a German missionary orphanage, thus surviving the Turkish Genocide of the Armenian people. She immigrated to the US via Cuba in 1921 and met and married Arthur soon afterwards. reared their three children in Dinuba, CA, on a family farm. Arthur was also a Tailor by trade. Pearl told of wonderful times she had with her extended family. Since Sarah, her mother, had many younger siblings, Pearl had many cousins with whom to play, and they took camping trips to the beach where the men would put up huge barracks-style tents for the families. Sometimes they would rent cabins in Yosemite and enjoy extended times together there. Mostly, though, Pearl remembered that just about every after church, family would gather at the house, sometimes spilling out onto the chairs around a spare table on the screened in porch, and enjoy a dinner together. Pearl and her older brother, Steve, and their younger brother, Harold were enveloped in love by a very large extended family. One of her favorite stories to tell was of a time her mother invited some dignified ladies from the church over for a luncheon when Pearl was a very little girl. Seeing how hospitality was such an important part of her household experience, little Pearl thought it would be delightful to offer these ladies a glass of water to drink, upon which they gladly accepted. As they were carrying on their conversation in another room, Pearl happily got them glasses of water that she brought in to serve. It wasn’t until a few minutes had passed that it occurred to her mother to ask where she had obtained the water, and she sweetly replied, “from the toiley.” This story was always followed by howls of laughter. By the time she was about ten, Pearl went to visit a nearby friend who was finishing up a piano lesson, and when she met the teacher she developed an interest in also having piano lessons. Soon she demonstrated a true gift at the piano, and a passion was born. Later she would say, though, that the gift of being able to “speak” through the music is achieved through mastery of the piece. “If you memorize it, and practice it over and over until it becomes something you don’t think about, then you can put expression into it.” She was being humble. All who heard her play could testify that she truly had an extraordinary talent of creating mental portraits, of telling stories, of drawing the mind and heart into praise with piano strings. Her children were spoiled to be able to drift asleep many nights to the soothing sound of their mother’s melodic soprano voice accompanied by the piano echoing softly through the house. Sometime around her senior year in high school, Pearl’s piano teacher encouraged her to compete at Julliard in New York. It is unclear whether this was an audition for admission, or whether it was a hosted competition for high school students, but whichever it was, Pearl won, but she never attended Julliard. God had grander plans. Meanwhile, God had been working in Pearl’s heart. She had a dear friend in high school die suddenly of an illness, which had a pronounced effect upon Pearl. She began thinking about serving the Lord fully, and dedicated her life to him. graduating from high school, Pearl went to Westmont , now Westmont University, in Santa Barbara, CA. She was a sensation right away, and whenever she and a piano were in the same room, there was a high likelihood that she would be surrounded by young people either listening to her play or singing along. It was early during her freshman year that she met James Richard Denham, Jr. The way she used to tell it was that she had overheard some other girls “swooning” over Richard while the girls were in the restroom powdering their faces and adjusting their hair. So, Pearl decided she’d stay away from him. It wasn’t long, though, before he noticed her and a relationship started to form. Very soon they both discovered a common interest in serving Christ on the mission field, and in an early note to her he wrote, “I am in the next few words making an attempt to tell you what you have meant to me. First, I have been strengthened in my determination to be only for the girl of my dreams. Second, you have restored somewhat in me my faith in the Christian girl of today. And third, I am determined to be worthy of the girl the Lord intends for me.” enjoyed each other’s company throughout their freshman year, but when Pearl returned home, her parents decided to enroll Pearl in the fall where her older brother, Steve, was a student at Bob Jones University, and they could keep each other company. Distance and time soon took a toll on the relationship between Richard and Pearl. Pearl graduated from Bob Jones University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance, and had a full page in the school annual with the title of “Miss Versatility.” She was highly admired by many other students, and years later when she would return to campus to visit, many alumni from her era who stayed on as faculty immediately recognized her and were delighted to greet her. During Pearl’s senior year, by God’s providence, a traveling singing group from BJU visited where Richard was, and he asked if any of the members of the group knew of Pearl and how she had been for the past three years. He wrote a friendly continued... |
